Position Summary

This position is that of a Police Officer. The primary duty is to serve the College Community as a sworn police officer. This position patrols roads and parking lots by motor vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to control traffic and parking. The officer patrols campus buildings on foot to act as a visible deterrent to criminal activity and provide assistance when needed. Responsibilities include handling medical emergencies, disturbances of the peace, making arrests, enforcing college policy, applying laws fairly to all persons, and providing emergency or public services. Public Safety Officers strive to provide a safe and secure learning environment.
Responsibilities and Duties
Patrol: Vehicle/Bicycle/Foot
- Patrol an assigned area to minimize the occurrence of crime, protect the peace, and serve the interests of the College.
- Respond to calls for police service.
- Investigate crimes, write detailed reports, protect crime scenes, collect and secure evidence.
- Provide assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Patrol College buildings and grounds to minimize, deter, and report safety and security hazards or violations.
- Patrol assigned roadways and parking lots, investigate irregularities, and facilitate the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
- Issue parking and traffic warnings and citations.
- Make arrests when necessary.
Respond to Police, Medical, and Fire Emergencies
- Render emergency first aid, evaluate the situation, and request advanced medical personnel if necessary.
- Respond to calls for police assistance and College security services.
- Serve subpoenas, warrants, and other legal documents issued by the court system or College judicial process.
- Respond to motor vehicle crashes, direct traffic, and investigate the accident, writing reports and taking appropriate legal action.
- Assist other law enforcement agencies when requested.
Investigations, Report Writing & Daily Activity Logs
- Investigate criminal complaints and citizen concerns related to the College.
- Prepare detailed reports of criminal and non-criminal complaints, traffic crashes, and other incidents.
- Interview complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Complete LiveScan fingerprinting.
- Work in conjunction with the Prosecutor’s Office, other law enforcement agencies, and the College’s Judicial System.
Public Relations, Communications, and Preventative Programming
- Provide public services including unlocking vehicles, escort services, assisting with wrecker requests, providing directions, and crime prevention education.
- Work in the department communication area, acting as a dispatcher, telephone operator, and alarm system monitor.
- Maintain a strong understanding of College functions, general operations, and policies.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or equivalent knowledge and skills.
- Licensed as a Police Officer by M.C.O.L.E.S.
- Valid, unrestricted Michigan Driver’s License.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with a diverse community, including students, employees, faculty, and visitors.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including days, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Must be physically able to perform all duties of a police officer, including:
- Sitting, standing, walking, running, driving a vehicle.
- Exposure to inclement weather.
- Brief periods of intense exertion.
- This position is classified as essential personnel and may be required to work when the College is closed.
Additional Experiences Considered
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (Major in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice preferred).
- Valid certification for C.P.R./First Aid – Medical First Responder Training preferred.
- Current training for use of force (lethal and non-lethal).
- Current training in precision driving skills.
- Prior experience in a College or University policing environment preferred.
