Position Summary
The Direct Support Professional supports individuals in reaching their personal goals, increasing independence, and participating fully in their community in the least restrictive environment possible.
The DSP provides person-centered assistance in areas such as mobility, personal care, activities of daily living, communication, health management, social development, vocational goals, recreation, and community participation.
Essential Responsibilities
Safety and Crisis Support

Monitor the health, safety, and well-being of individuals served.
-
Provide the level of supervision required by each individual’s care plan, including direct observation or scheduled safety checks.

Support crisis prevention, intervention, de-escalation, and resolution.
-
Follow all organizational, licensing, and safety procedures.
-
Report concerns, incidents, injuries, or changes in condition promptly and accurately.
Personal Care and Daily Living

Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including:
-
Bathing and showering
-
Dressing and undressing
-
Grooming and hair care
-
Nail care
-
Toileting and restroom assistance
-
Meal preparation and cooking
-
Transportation and mobility
-
Encourage individuals to complete tasks as independently as possible.

Help individuals develop problem-solving, communication, self-care, and independent-living skills.
Health and Medical Support
-
Monitor vital signs and changes related to medical conditions or illnesses.
-
Attend medical appointments with individuals when assigned.
-
Communicate accurate information between healthcare providers and the individual’s care team.
-
Read, understand, and help implement medical, behavioral, clinical, and person-centered care plans.

Complete timely, accurate, and descriptive documentation.

Promote healthy routines and positive behavior.
Community Participation

Assist individuals with participating in community activities, volunteer opportunities, education, career development, and employment.

Transport or accompany individuals to stores, appointments, concerts, movies, social events, and recreational activities.

Help individuals identify hobbies, leisure interests, and meaningful community connections.

Support relationship-building with family members, peers, professionals, and community partners.
Communication and Relationships

Build respectful, trusting, and supportive relationships with individuals served.

Communicate consistently with supervisors, coworkers, families, healthcare providers, and other members of the care team.

Demonstrate patience, empathy, professionalism, and respect for personal choice.

Protect the dignity, privacy, rights, and confidentiality of every individual served.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:

A high school diploma or GED

A valid State of Michigan driver’s license

Basic computer skills

The ability to lift up to 50 pounds

The ability to complete required documentation accurately

The ability to become certified in CPR and First Aid

The ability to complete all required employer-provided training
-
Reliable attendance and a commitment to working assigned shifts

The ability to perform personal-care and community-support responsibilities
