Position Summary:
Under the supervision of Tribal School Principal, provide instruction and activities for students emphasizing the importance of physical activity and healthy choices. Provide appropriate physical education that helps students develop the knowledge, fitness levels, motor skills, and personal and social skills to obtain the ultimate goal of a lifetime of physical activity and health. All education staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with Tribal Education department staff for purposes of collaboration and planning.
- Assist in the development of health and physical education programs designed to accommodate the cultural, educational, social, emotional, creative and other identified needs of Native American students.
- Develop physical education lesson plans that reflect approved and current curriculum aligned instruction standards for grades PreK-6.
- Make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies.
- Develop and implement innovative methods for providing instruction to students.
- Implement goals and objectives of the Tribal Education Department.
- Gather, analyze, interpret and report student data to make informed instructional decisions.
- Communicate and maintain strong relationships with parents and families.
- Utilize classroom management strategies to maintain a positive learning environment.
- Report student behaviors and accidents to building administrators immediately.
- Work with other tribal programs to insure holistic approach within the classroom incorporating an awareness of cultural norms and needs of the students.
- Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and all other privacy regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Contact with students in a classroom or physical education setting.
- Contact with parents, volunteers, and educational staff at the Tribal School.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor`s degree in Education, Health, Fitness or related field.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with current assessment requirements and state standards.
- Two years teaching PK-6 Physician Education classes.
- Proficiency in speaking Ojibwe Language.
- Experience working with Native students and communities.
- State of Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- Teaching Certificate with an emphasis in Physical Education or Health.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification within probationary period.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver`s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
- Knowledge of education, physical education, and health principles and practices.
- Knowledge in records management.
- Knowledge of curriculum development.
- Skill in teaching children in PK-12 grades.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to be organized and effectively listen to and respond to patron inquiries.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.

- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
