Job Summary

The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) provides high-quality medical and surgical support to the shelter veterinarian and the veterinary team. This position involves assisting with the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of animals in the shelter, as well as community-owned pets seen in the shelter clinic. Duties include performing medical procedures, administering medications, conducting diagnostics, and monitoring animal health. The LVT plays an essential role in promoting the health and welfare of animals under the shelter’s care while adhering to humane and ethical practices.

Essential Functions

• Assist the shelter veterinarian with physical exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments for shelter and community-owned animals.

• Prepare animals for surgery, monitor them during procedures, and provide post-operative care.

• Provide preventative veterinary care and daily health monitoring for shelter animals.

• Educate clients/public on post-surgery care instructions.

• Collaborate with the veterinary team to improve animal care processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

• Associate’s Degree in veterinary technology from an accredited program.

Experience:

• One (1) or more years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician.

Preferred:

• Experience in a shelter or high-volume clinic setting.

• Experience performing spay/neuter surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and emergency care.

Special Requirements:

• Current and valid State of Michigan licensure as a Veterinary Technician.

• Willingness to work outside regular office hours for emergency care, outreach, or special events.

• Valid Michigan driver’s license upon hire.
