Qualifications:
- Strong writing, reporting and interviewing skills
- Familiarity with AP style
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently with an editor
- Knowledge of Alger County and/or the Upper Peninsula is a plus
- Photography skills are helpful but not required
- Journalism experience is preferred, but we are open to developing strong writers with relevant experience and an interest in community journalism
This is a remote freelance position. Some assignments will require attendance at meetings, events or interviews within the Beacon’s coverage area.
Compensation is paid per assignment, with opportunities ranging from occasional contributions to regular weekly assignments, depending on experience, availability and newsroom needs.

The Munising Beacon is a locally owned weekly newspaper committed to strong community journalism and serving the businesses, organizations, schools and residents of Alger County and the surrounding Upper Peninsula.
In our first year under local ownership, the Beacon earned 14 Michigan Press Association awards, recognizing the strength of our journalism, photography and overall work while we continued to grow and invest in the newspaper.
