Position Summary Information
Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions
The successful candidate must demonstrate experience, skills, and commitment to fostering an environment of belonging, diversity, equity and inclusion in students, faculty and staff.
The head coach must demonstrate Delta College Athletics’ five key values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership. The coach promotes academic success and helps student-athletes become champions on and off the field.
The head coach helps student-athletes improve personal, leadership, and teamwork skills. Responsibilities include recruiting, scheduling opponents, scholarship and budget oversight, training, and coaching team members. The head coach must follow all rules and regulations established by Delta College, the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), while serving as a responsible community member and role model.
GENERAL OFFICE AND TEAM CONTRIBUTIONS
- Embed the College’s mission and values throughout all responsibilities and focus on student success in decision-making.
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural competency.
- Contribute to a positive teamwork environment.
- Remain in compliance with the philosophy, mission, and guiding principles of Delta College.
- Uphold all athletic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures established by Delta College, NJCAA, and MCCAA.
- Attend MCCAA, NJCAA, and Delta College meetings as directed by the Athletic Director or conference leadership.
- Support Athletic Department initiatives, strategic goals, decisions, and policies.
- Provide leadership and serve as a role model for student-athletes, the department, and the College.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
- Establish a coaching philosophy, skill development plan, and techniques for all seasons.
- Establish expectations for accountability, cooperation, collaboration, behavior, and disciplinary action.
- Recruit academically prepared student-athletes in compliance with Delta College, MCCAA, and NJCAA regulations.
- Establish and implement off-season activities.
- Collaborate with Athletics and student support staff to promote academic success and monitor progress.
- Follow and uphold the coaches’ and student-athlete codes of conduct.
- Work with the Athletic Director to establish fundraising opportunities that support program goals.
- Assist with game schedules, event management, athletic trainers, officials, travel, meals, and lodging.
- Develop practice schedules and identify facility needs within established timelines.
- Assist with obtaining student-athlete eligibility information.
- Maintain an inventory of equipment and submit recommendations or requests.
- Maintain student-athlete travel records and return records within seven days after the season.
- Attend all scheduled practices and competitions and travel with the team.
- Maintain a positive and clean locker room, practice field, and contest environment.
- Mentor student-athletes and reinforce the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, student conduct manual, and institutional policies.
- Monitor grades, conduct, eligibility, and academic progress; assist with study hall requirements.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Trainer regarding injuries and the Emergency Action Plan.
- Establish team rules for attendance, punctuality, dress, practice, and behavior while following due process.
- Remain within budget and develop fundraising, alumni, and public relations opportunities.
- Submit travel advance forms before the season for transportation assignments and meal checks.
- Assign and track athletic equipment issued to student-athletes.
- Submit written proposals for recruiting trips, camps, clinics, and fundraising initiatives.
- Participate in budget planning for the following season.
- Represent Delta College with integrity, respect, sportsmanship, and professionalism.
- Use institutional promotional tools, maintain website information, and provide program news.
- Provide student-athletes with information and opportunities at NCAA or NAIA institutions.
- Maintain relationships with news agencies and league, regional, and national offices.
- Establish relationships with local and regional high school coaches for recruitment.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree.
- Minimum of three years of coaching experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license with no restrictions affecting the transportation of students.
- First Aid and CPR certification, or completion within the first 30 days of employment.
- Knowledge of MCCAA, Region XII, and NJCAA regulations.
- Knowledge of Athletic Department policies, procedures, and required forms.
- College-acceptable driving record.
- Compliance with drug-free workplace rules and Board policies.
- Understanding of Title IX and mandated reporting.
- Availability for evening and weekend hours.
- Availability to travel for practices, competitions, and recruitment.
- Weekly availability for afternoon/evening practices.
- Ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural, and diverse student populations.
- Professionalism and commitment to a positive work environment.
Additional Experiences Considered
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five to seven years of progressively responsible coaching experience at the high school level or higher.
- Working knowledge of MCCAA and NJCAA rules and regulations.
- Weekly availability for 4:30 PM–7:30 PM practices.
