Position Overview
Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Summer Museum Director to lead museum operations during the 2026 open season. This seasonal leadership role is ideal for individuals studying or passionate about history, museum studies, public history, heritage interpretation, education, or nonprofit leadership.
The Summer Museum Director oversees daily operations, coordinates volunteers, and plays a key role in delivering engaging visitor experiences while strengthening the museum’s public presence throughout the summer.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day museum operations during the open season (mid-May–September)
- Provide leadership, supervision, and support to museum volunteers and tour guides
- Coordinate volunteer schedules, training, and daily assignments
- Assist with planning and delivering tours and educational experiences
- Ensure a welcoming, engaging, and informative visitor experience
- Support outreach efforts to increase museum visibility and community engagement
- Perform basic administrative tasks, including visitor tracking and communications
- Uphold museum policies, safety procedures, and operational standards
Qualifications
- Academic or personal interest in history, museum studies, public history, or related fields
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Organizational skills to manage volunteers and daily operations
- Customer service experience and comfort engaging with the public
- Prior museum, education, or leadership experience is helpful but not required
Position Details & Compensation
- Employment Type: Seasonal
- Dates: Mid-May through September (flexible end date for qualified candidates)
- Compensation: $2,400–$2,800 per month, based on experience
