Community Engagement Coordinator

If the selected candidate is at a pay range of F2 or higher, they will remain at their current rate of pay with the current step process as the Community Engagement Coordinator.
PURPOSE:
This position is responsible for developing and implementing public fire education, fire prevention, drug awareness education, and recruitment strategies for the Fire Department. This role involves creating and delivering educational sessions, fostering partnerships with schools and community groups, and preparing instructional materials.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum one (1) year of experience as a Firefighter, with successful completion of the probationary period with the City of Saginaw Fire department on or before the Oral Interview date.

Major Duties
-
Develop, coordinate, and deliver educational programs on fire safety, fire prevention, drug awareness, and recruitment to students, community groups, and organizations.

Assess the needs of the community to address and reduce adolescent health risk behaviors.

Serve as a liaison with internal and external agencies and community resources to support opioid and drug-free initiatives.

Maintain a presence in the schools, building connections with students and staff to promote drug-free awareness, fire prevention, and recruitment.

Record, evaluate, and validate program activities to ensure their effectiveness and relevance to the audience.

Compile and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of community engagement programs.

Prepare clear and concise written materials, including press releases, correspondence, and educational content.

Operate department-provided educational equipment, such as the fire safety house and fire extinguisher prop.

Attend regional and state meetings to stay informed about current trends and concerns.

Stay updated on community needs and develop programs to respond to them.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal and/or Fire Chief.

Support operational activities during major fire incidents as required.

Job Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in fire science, fire administration, public or business administration or related field is preferred.

Minimum one (1) year of experience as a Firefighter, with successful completion of the probationary period with the City of Saginaw Fire department.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.

Knowledge of the City of Saginaw Fire Department’s Standard Operation Procedures (SOP), rules, regulations, and relevant City policies and ordinances.

Completion of Botvin Lifeskills Provider Training within 6 months of being placed into the position.

NFPA Fire Instructor I certification or ability to complete the certification process within one (1) year of being placed into the position.

Successful completion of FEMA’s Public Information Awareness and Basic courses or the ability to complete within one (1) year of being placed into the position.

Proficiency in using a personal computer and various software applications.

Strong public speaking and presentation skills.

Clear and concise communication, both orally and in writing.

Ability to follow instructions promptly and accurately.

Skill in exercising tact, patience, and diplomacy when engaging with the public, business, and students.

Knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) principles and practices.

Professional demeanor and presentation.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and maintain composure under stress.
Working Conditions
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently requires standing, walking, grasping, manipulating or making small precise hand movements and occasionally requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling; work has special vision requirements and requires close and distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and/or peripheral vision; vocal communication is required to express detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, and /or quickly; hearing is required to hear detailed information through oral communication and/or make fine distinctions in sound; work requires working near moving mechanical parts and working in outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with typing and/or computer printers, light traffic).
