SAPA Transmission is seeking a skilled Senior CNC Machinist to join our manufacturing team. As a Senior CNC Machinist, you will play a key role in the setup, operation, adjustment, and optimization of our machines to manufacture high-precision automatic transmissions and components for U.S. Army tracked vehicles. This position requires a strong technical foundation, attention to detail, and a commitment to producing mission-critical parts that meet the highest standards of quality and performance.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate multi-axis machining centers and mill-turn equipment with Fanuc, Mazatrol, and Siemens Sinumerik controls to manufacture components such as transmission housings, housing covers, piston housings, gears, and splines.
- Review and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and NC programs to ensure accuracy and alignment with production specifications.
- Monitor tool life and tool wear, make cutter comp adjustments or replace tools as needed to maintain optimal performance.
- Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
- Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to ensure they meet quality standards, and document and report any deviations or defects.
- Identify and implement process improvements by applying best practices and lean manufacturing principles to enhance productivity and reduce waste.
- Mentor and train junior machinists and operators by providing guidance on best practices, safety procedures, and efficient machine operations.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of production runs, machine settings, and maintenance activities to ensure proper documentation and accessibility.
- Work closely with engineers, CNC programmers, production planners, and other team members to resolve production issues and meet project deadlines.
- Troubleshoot programs and manufacturing issues on the shop floor.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate’s degree in machining or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience as a CNC machinist, with a proven track record of operating and setting up CNC machines.
- Proficiency in operating multi-axis mills, mill-turns, lathes, and other machining equipment.
- Experience with Makino, Mazak, and Heller machining centers preferred.
- Experience with Fanuc, Mazatrol, and Siemens Sinumerik controls preferred.
- Strong understanding of blueprint reading, GD&T, and G-Code NC programs.
- Experience with precision measurement tools and measurement techniques.
- Familiarity with Zoller equipment and TMS software, along with experience in Fastems Automation and MMS software, is preferred.
- Experience cutting aluminum, mild & alloy steels, and stainless steel.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in machining.
- Experience in a leadership or mentoring role is a plus.
