SAPA Transmission is seeking a skilled CNC Programmer to design and optimize machining processes for our automatic transmissions and components used in U.S. Army tracked vehicles. As a CNC Programmer, you will play a key role in defining machine programming, selecting cutting tools, and implementing probing techniques to develop efficient manufacturing processes that minimize human intervention, quality issues, and machine downtime.
Responsibilities:
- Create, implement, and refine NC/CNC programs for 3, 4, and 5-axis machining centers and mill-turn equipment, focusing on the machining of transmission housings, covers, piston housings, gears, and splines.
- Analyze engineering specifications, blueprints, and process flows to ensure efficient, accurate machining of transmission components that meet customer requirements.
- Assess and plan for workforce utilization, space requirements, workflow, equipment layout, and workspace optimization to achieve maximum efficiency.
- Estimate production times and associated costs to support management decision-making.
- Utilize statistical methods to forecast future manufacturing requirements and potential.
- Continuously evaluate and implement lean manufacturing practices to reduce waste, enhance cycle time, improve tool life, and optimize overall equipment effectiveness.
- Collaborate directly with the shop floor team to swiftly address and resolve programming, quality, and manufacturing challenges, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency.
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, Machine Tool Technology, or a closely related field preferred.
- 5+ years in CNC Programming or Applications Engineering.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, technical specifications, and procedures.
- Demonstrated mathematics and analytical skills.
- Proven experience in commissioning new CNC machines.
- Experience supervising and mentoring CNC programmers.
- Proficient in G-Code programming with a solid understanding of CNC operation and setup.
- Experience with CAD/CAM systems, Microsoft Office, and manual programming/editing.
- Skilled in using micrometers, bore gauges, depth gauges, and other manual measurement tools.
- Advanced Renishaw probe programming experience preferred.
- Knowledge of machining aluminum, mild steels, alloy steels, and stainless steel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher) preferred.
- Experience in high-mix, low-volume production.
- Proactive and collaborative approach to teamwork and problem-solving.
- Experience with Makino machining centers is preferred.
- Siemens NX CAD/CAM system experience is a plus.
- Availability for occasional travel. (<10%)
