Basic function and Responsibility:
To operate and perform maintenance/repair work related on boilers, autoclaves, sterilization/wash units and supporting equipment. Coordinate the proper use, validation and documentation of the autoclaves, sterilization/wash units and supporting equipment along with the supporting steam utility in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and AAMI standards.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain autoclaves (steam, and vaporized hydrogen peroxide) as well as affiliated equipment through preventative maintenance and repair on all associated systems. These may include fitting, valve adjustments, replacement of pneumatic components, electric or hydraulic system troubleshooting, etc.
Maintain and repair water systems for boilers supplying autoclaves/sterilization/wash equipment including fitting, flaring, threading, and sweating.
Maintain boilers for medical rated autoclaves/sterilizers/washers and associated equipment for the Michigan Medicine system including off site facilities through preventative maintenance and repair.
Routinely inspect all Michigan Medicine autoclave/sterilizer/wash equipment for proper operation and general need for service. Assist in determining when equipment is at end of life and in need of budgetary consideration for replacement.
Repair, maintain, program, or replace electrical motors, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, disposers, controls, relays, contactors and control boards for autoclaves/sterilizers/washers, boilers, and associated equipment.
Monitor gas exhaust (Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide) and prepare reports for proper agencies to ensure regulatory compliance.
Teardown and repair boilers, autoclaves/sterilizers/washers and affiliated equipment using cables, slings, rope-falls, rigging, block and tackle and any other rigging apparatus for moving heavy objects safely.
Related Duties:
Utilize Maximo work order system for proper accounting of time and details of work completed.
Complete all other assigned job role related work orders utilizing fundamental prioritization of work.
Program and maintain computerized control systems of autoclaves/sterilizers/washers, boilers, and associated equipment.
Generate monthly or on demand computerized reports pertaining to autoclave/sterilizer/wash systems (steam, and vaporized hydrogen peroxide etc.
Inspect and adjust automatic or manual control mechanisms on all autoclaves/sterilizers/wash units and associated boilers.
Inspect, install, and repair steam supply lines, insulation, valves, pumps and safety devices on autoclaves/sterilizers/wash equipment and boilers.
Ensure proper equipment operation and document validation of in accordance with AAMI and CDC standards.
- Graduation from a four-year trade or vocational high school with mechanical courses included in the curriculum.
- Four years of progressively increasing responsibility/experience in boiler/autoclave operation and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Reasonable understanding of physics, chemistry, microbiology, and human anatomy.
- Ability to tolerate work in confined spaces, warm and occasionally noisy environments with use of proper PPE.
- Reasonable mechanical aptitude.
- Reasonable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in boiler/autoclave and sterilization.
- Reasonable knowledge of the operation, theory and maintenance of autoclaves, boilers, and sterilization equipment.
- Physical ability to perform the full range of duties of the classification.
