Job Summary: Under the direction of the High School Principal, the Athletic Director - Assistant Principal acts as the high school principal’s representative for interscholastic athletic activities and as liaison between the superintendent, other central office administrators, principals, and the coaching staff in matters of policy, philosophy, and assignment of coaching personnel.
- Organize/supervise the athletic programs and coordinate facilities, equipment, officials, transportation requests, budget, and scheduling
- Administer and supervise all athletic events, or delegate these duties and ensure that duties have been carried out effectively
- Make all necessary arrangements for all high school interscholastic athletic activities
- Supervise, advise and inform all coaches in their duties and responsibilities
- Evaluate all programs and coaching staff yearly subject to the approval of the building principal
- Issue game and official contracts with other secondary schools and officials
- Serve as the representative for Portage Central HS to the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference and work with other conference member schools in the formulation of conference bylaws, rules, regulations, sport specific rules/formats/awards, develop league schedules, serve as the chairperson and oversee at least one league sport, and periodically serve as the host school for conference meets. Serve as resource person to the principals, coaches, and athletic department in formulation of regulations and recommendations relative to schedules, contracts, eligibility, equipment, leadership, awards, officials, playing facilities, insurance, transportation, etc.
- Initiate purchases for the athletic department within the limitation of the budget and following approved purchasing procedures
- Work collaboratively with athletic training staff to ensure safety of student-athletes to include, verifying medical clearance for athletic participation, ensuring first aid and CPR certification for coaches, verifying proper re-entry to athletic participation following injury, and maintaining athletic facilities and equipment
- Work with principals and coaching staff to develop and to maintain a strong public relations program
- Other duties may include organization and supervision of hall supervisors, administration of parking regulations for the students and staff, evaluation of teachers, and administering discipline enforcement for code violations by students and student-athletes
- Respond professionally and appropriately to volatile situations when they arise
- Perform other human resources duties as assigned

- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools High School Student Handbook, the High School building handbook, and the Portage Public Schools Board policies and administrative guidelines
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and regulations contained in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Handbook as PPS schools are members of this organization and must abide by their rules as well as possess a willingness to serve on various MHSAA committees and periodically host MHSAA post season tournaments
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in education
- Master's degree required, preferably in Educational Leadership, Athletic Administration or Sport Management
- Valid Michigan Administrator Certification for Secondary Education, or the ability to obtain an administrator permit with MDE for PPS and the appropriate certification within 3 years
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate and teaching experience preferred
- Minimum of five years successful secondary teaching experience, or similar successful coaching experience, successful program-leadership experience, or successful athletic administration experience
- Successful experience in a leadership role in education, and in coaching and leading an athletic program
- Certification from NIAAA (RAA, CAA, CMAA) preferred
