Overview:
Develops research and analytics to advance projects focused on the intersection of neuroscience and architecture, human health and perception and design and outcome. Possesses and applies a broad knowledge in review of research project proposals, assistance with the development of experiments, tools, reports and paper writing, and assists (if needed) with design research lab operations. Anticipates job expectations while performing design and technical tasks requiring application of standard techniques and knowledge. Mentors Junior design Researchers and research practitioners.
Responsibilities:
Participates in designing and conducting research studies at the intersection of neuroscience and architecture
Provides research support to design projects anchored on human experience
Develops research tools and analytics
Participates in communicating research findings in both peer-reviewed forums and mainstream media
Works on architectural projects as a subject matter advisor and design researcher
Provides knowledge gained through studies to the firm with experiential exhibitions, workshops, and presentations
Works with research and design teams to collect and analyze data
May assist design teams with the development of prototypes and translation of design intent with innovative fabrication techniques
Maintains a collection of knowledge and equipment involving sensing technology for the collection of relevant data for gaining insights on the effect of place on people
Manages administrative duties for leading research projects
Assists in maintaining and cultivating partnerships with academic and industry partners
Assists with the development of tools and training to design teams
Spends an assigned amount of time advising on research projects in the Incubator, our practice-led research program
Communicates with other disciplines, vendors and contractors to incorporate information into design, project requirements and documents as needed
Participates in team meetings to discuss project issues, design and technical issues and coordination with other disciplines
Demonstrates systems thinking
May assist in explorations with design teams, ranging from low fidelity rapid prototypes to immersive environments
Supports and acts as ambassador of the firm's cultural values, including a commitment to quality, innovation, learning and growth
Acts as a mentor by coaching and motivating project team members
Seeks leadership opportunities by providing direction and feedback to team members and collaborating with team leaders
Fosters and maintains a collaborative professional working relationship with project teams
Promotes the firm's principles of 'design excellence' through the integration ofresponsible and sustainable design practice with the art of design
Collaborates in delivering project on defined budget requirements
Identifies and may assist in implementing cost savings ideas in collaboration with team
Understands the financial implications of overhead and chargeable time, including accountability to project plan and planned utilization rate
Fosters awareness of the importance of growing and maintaining client relationships
Assists in identifying, maintaining and cultivating essential relationships
Participates with civic, community and industry professional organizations with commitment and professional integrity to represent HKS
Qualifications:
Advanced degree in a design, technology, cognitive science, social science or other relevant field, preferably PhD
Related accreditation preferred
Typically 5+ years of working experience in research
Proficiency in one or more of the following skills of physical and digital prototyping, research methodology, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, academic and industry writing, common digital workflows, and design tools such as Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper and Adobe Suite preferred
Proficiency in statistical software packages
Proficiency in MS Office Suite
Familiarity with research, grant submissions, and financials preferred
Familiarity with AEC industry workflows and processes
Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines
Knowledge of the entire project lifecycle, through post-occupancy
Knowledge of materials, construction techniques and building codes preferred
Strong graphic, visualization and representation skills to communicate design ideas
Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing
