Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of mid-to journey level skilled mechanical and electrical work in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of motorized heavy equipment, heavy/light trucks, and automobiles. Work in this classification is distinguished from that of a Fleet Maintenance Technician I by the greater complexity of assignments received, the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate, and the exercise of judgment and initiative in the performance of daily duties.
Major Duties:
Performs vehicle repairs classified as Light Duty (Class 1-2), Medium Duty (Class 3-6), and Heavy Duty (Class 7-8) with assistance of supervision as needed.
Performs computerized, physical diagnostics, and repair on automotive, truck and heavy equipment engine, driveline, lighting, and hydraulic control systems.
Repairs various heavy equipment and other specialized equipment.
Rebuilds hydraulic components, alternators, generators, compressors, and carburetors.
Repairs equipment following specification as outlined in service manuals.
Repairs brakes on automobiles, heavy/light trucks and some heavy equipment.
Performs daily data computer entry and accesses information concerning work orders and repair orders.
Performs some basic design/modification/fabrication alternatives to keep equipment operable.
Performs shop and tool maintenance at a high level of competence.
Performs welding, fabrication, and lathe work.
Acts as lead worker to include training and oversight of other fleet maintenance personnel and provide task-oriented direction, technical information to entry level fleet maintenance staff as appropriate.
Performs some bodywork and painting, realignment of windows, doors, and collision estimates.
Performs other mechanical equipment repair tasks and related duties such as answering radio calls to the garage when needed and overseeing emergency crews during weather related events and major equipment breakdowns, as directed by supervision.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Required completion of one (1) year of formal training in a postsecondary institution/training program OR four (4) certifications from the State of Michigan in any of the Heavy-duty truck repair categories.
Minimum of one (1) year of responsible vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair experience equivalent to a Fleet Mechanic I at the City of Saginaw OR three (3) years external experience with general fleet maintenance and repair.
Minimum of one (1) year experience with welding techniques and using welding equipment for cutting and fabricating.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group (A) with airbrakes.
Ability to read and interpret schematics and service manuals, utilizing books, computers and the internet.
Ability to observe and comply with safety regulations, work effectively and efficiently.
Must provide own tools.
Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
