Position Purpose
Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of mid- to journey-level skilled mechanical and electrical work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of motorized heavy equipment, heavy/light trucks, and automobiles. Work in this classification is distinguished from Fleet Maintenance Technician I by the greater complexity of assignments, the independence expected, and the exercise of judgment and initiative in daily duties.
Major Duties

Performs vehicle repairs classified as Light Duty (Class 1–2), Medium Duty (Class 3–6), and Heavy Duty (Class 7–8) with supervision assistance as needed.

Performs computerized and physical diagnostics, and repair on engines, drivelines, lighting, and hydraulic control systems.

Repairs heavy equipment and other specialized equipment.

Rebuilds hydraulic components, alternators, generators, compressors, and carburetors.

Repairs equipment per service manual specifications.

Repairs brakes on automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.

Performs daily computer data entry and accesses information concerning work orders.

Performs basic design/modification/fabrication to keep equipment operable.

Maintains shop and tools at a high level of competence.

Performs welding, fabrication, and lathe work.

Acts as lead worker, training and directing fleet maintenance staff and providing technical information to entry-level employees.

Performs some bodywork and painting, realignment of windows and doors.

Responds to radio calls, assists garage operations, and oversees emergency crews during weather events or major breakdowns.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Possession of four (4) State of Michigan Heavy-Duty certifications: Suspension & Steering, Electrical Systems, Brakes & Braking Systems, and Engine Repair. Equivalent ASE certifications accepted.

One (1) year of government fleet maintenance experience OR three (3) years working on heavy duty trucks and motorized equipment.

One (1) year experience with welding and fabrication.

Must maintain a valid State of Michigan CDL, Group A.

Ability to read and interpret schematics and service manuals, using books, computers, and online resources.

Ability to comply with safety regulations, work effectively and efficiently.

Must provide own tools.

Ability to use computer systems, software, and business equipment relevant to work performed.
Working Conditions
This work requires frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds; regular use of hands, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and repetitive motions; frequent standing, walking, speaking, hearing, climbing, balancing, tasting, smelling, pushing, pulling, and lifting; occasional sitting.
Requires close vision and the ability to inspect small parts. Vocal communication is needed to convey detailed instructions. Hearing is needed to receive detailed information and distinguish sounds. Work involves visual inspection, assembly or fabrication, operating machines, vehicles, and monitoring activities.
Work includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic chemicals, electrical shock, vibrations, and occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, high places, and outdoor weather. Noise levels are very loud (e.g., jackhammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Position may work varied shifts and must be available for overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergencies outside normal hours.
