RATE OF PAY: $16.37 per hour entry, progressing to $19.34 per hour after 2 years (TU06)

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The WIC screening technician performs anthropometric, hemoglobin, lead screening and clerical functions for the WIC Program. Requires knowledge of departmental activities including: precision and accuracy with data entry and specimen collection; clerical responsibilities; community resources. Must work well with small children. Works under the supervision of the WIC Manager and Health Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Performs the following according to Federal, State and Local policy and procedures:
a. Accurately conducts anthropometric data of weight, height, and head circumference of clients.
b. Assesses the need for and the collection of blood samples from children and women for hemoglobin and/or lead status.
c. Provide proper care and disposal of lab waste materials.
d. Maintains complete, accurate and up-to-date quality control logs and records.
e. Performs daily cleaning and sanitation of equipment, instruments and work area.
f. Perform daily and weekly quality control testing and calibration of lab equipment.
g. Inspects laboratory supplies and equipment and report to manager if adjustments or repairs are needed.
h. Rotates supplies/stock to prevent expiration of dated materials.
i. Plot measurements on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts manually as needed.
j. Completes data entry for billing purposes for Laboratory.
2. Serves as clerical support in WIC program by data entry into MI-WIC including but not limited to: setting appointments for clients in need of services, completing nutrition education, issuance of client benefits and transferring clients from other State/Local programs.
3. Frequently interacts with clients, clinical nurse, dietitian, clerical staff, manager and other Health Department staff through written, telephonic and face to face communications.
4. Assist the WIC Manager, as required.
5. Assumes duties of other WIC clerical and technical staff in their absence, and as requested.
6. In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties
inside or outside of Bay County. Perform emergency response roles, as required.
7. Punctual and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
8. All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED (WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMODATIONS):
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree
(GED)
• Proficiency in data entry, basic math and spelling.
• Typing speed of 50 WPM
• Must be able to perform multiple tasks nearly
simultaneously, such as waiting on clients, answering the telephone, typing, retrieving information, communicating with staff, etc.
• Excellent work, attendance and discipline record.
• Excellent references and background check.
• Must be able to communicate and courteously react to upset or angry clients.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:
• Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) electronic reporting system: MILOGIN
• Prior experience in obtaining anthropometric measurements and blood samples and/or MDHHS Lab/Anthropometric Training for WIC with competency assessment
• Reading and comprehension skills sufficient to understand Federal/State guidelines
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters
• Detail oriented, logical approach to problem solving
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service to effectively and tactfully deal with a diverse group, including staff and clients, especially children

This position involves standing, walking and sitting for significant periods of time. Requires use of hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and ability to stoop, kneel or crouch. Additional requirements include the ability to move objects according to the following weight & frequency: Generally, 40 pounds of force up to one quarter of the time.
