About the Position
The Saginaw Fire Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Firefighters, serving the community in fire protection, emergency response, hazardous material handling, and more. Firefighters respond to incidents alongside company officers, performing critical tasks and ensuring the safety and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and property. This position may also require acting as an Engineer when needed.

Key Responsibilities
- Respond to fire incidents, natural disasters, vehicle accidents, and hazardous situations.
- Conduct inspections to ensure tools and equipment are clean and operational.
- Maintain fire stations, vehicles, apparatus, and equipment.
- Participate in community outreach, fire prevention programs, and pre-incident surveys.
- Complete required reports and forms.
- Follow department policies and orders from superiors respectfully and promptly.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned, including Engineer duties as required by staffing.
- Ensure the protection and efficient use of department resources.
Job Requirements
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
- Physical Fitness: Must be in good physical health and pass an NFPA 1582 medical exam annually.
- Background Check: No felony convictions at the time of hire.
- Probation Period: Successfully complete a 12-month probationary period.
- Knowledge: Must know the streets, addresses, and locations within Saginaw to respond effectively to incidents.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Driving: Safely operate fire vehicles under adverse conditions.
- Gear Use: Wear personal protective equipment, including SCBA, in emergencies.
- Heavy Lifting: Pull, lift, and carry heavy objects (fire hoses, ladders, equipment, victims).
- High Elevations: Climb stairs or ladders and work at elevated heights.
- Hazardous Conditions: Work in smoke, heat, and other hazardous environments.
- Weather Conditions: Work in any weather as required.

- Certification: Applicants with Firefighter I and II certifications are encouraged to apply. Certification copies should be included in the application.
