RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- USW Union.
- 260-day position.
- Rate of pay is $25.30 per hour.
- One (1) full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
- Start date is upon expiration of the posting deadline and in accordance with Article XIII, Section C, 2 of the Contract.
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Mechanic position is responsible for keeping the District’s vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problem or interruptions to the educational program.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: By having a vast background of mechanical knowledge, the individual in this position will be able to analyze and locate the source of mechanical trouble in the District’s vehicles.
- Responsible for the diagnosing, assigning, and repairing of the District’s fleet.
- Assist in maintaining a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Assist in establishing an efficient and effective system of routine maintenance and preventative care.
- Assist in setting up and supervising a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies, and keeping records and inventories in cooperation with the Director of Transportation.
- Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
- Reports any and all unsafe and hazardous conditions.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or the Assistant Director of Transportation.
- Assist in assuring the garage and areas surrounding the facility are clean and functional, assists with snow removal.
- Retain certification, attend training opportunities and meetings as required and remain current on school bus laws and regulations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or GED equivalency.
- Associates Degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Mechanics from an approved program or licensed diesel mechanic in State of Michigan with certification in the following areas:
- Drive Train
- Suspension and steering
- Diesel engines
- Brakes
- Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Preventative maintenance inspection
- Minimum of three years successful experience as an auto mechanic, bus experience preferred.
- Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency at transportation mechanical repair.
- Must have CDL with air brake, passenger endorsement preferred.
- Must have School Bus Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Demonstrated experience with computerized garage system.
- Ability to work well with diverse groups and individuals.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
- Ability to react to change productively.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage one’s daily work schedule.
- Ability to understand and follow directions both oral and written.
- Willing to receive additional training provided by the District to improve skills.
- Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement.
TESTING: Qualified candidates must show proof of certification.
