Job Title: Central Utilities Technician
Summary:
The Central Utilities Technician troubleshoots Operates and maintains stationary mechanical equipment for peak performance and up-time. Equipment types that are maintained and/or operated include but are not limited to steam boilers, cooling towers, air compressors, and turbines that provide site utilities such as steam, chilled water, and compressed air to a large facility and its industrial production processes.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Recognize safety hazards and follow safety guidelines for personal protection and protection of coworkers and the public.
Gain knowledge of environmental rules and regulations, and effectively apply them to all work situations.
Operates and monitors various computer-controlled utility production systems to help assure peak efficiencies and maximum up-time.
Reads meters, gauges, and automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions and to log required data.
Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges as necessary. Performs switch-overs to backup equipment at periodic intervals to test backup systems or as needed for repairs and troubleshooting..
Maintains, cleans, lubricates and overhauls equipment and components that include but are not limited to various kinds of piping, pipe fittings, bearings, gaskets, valves, packing glands, recorders, gauges, stokers, water & chemical pumps, fans, turbines, converters, belts, soot blowers, grates, seals, drive gears, compressors, refrigeration equipment, reverse osmosis & demineralized water systems, boiler refractory, ash handling systems, oil heating & transfer systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic control systems.
Learn the facility layout and system operation, and continually update knowledge of the facility systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Journeyman certificate; High school Diploma/GED equivalent; Incumbent must be a graduate of an accredited Central Utilities Technician apprenticeship program or Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program w/ a minimum of 5 years' experience operating industrial boilers/chillers/and air compressors.
Valid Driver's License.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate clearly and unambiguously in both oral and written terms.
Intermediate or higher knowledge level of industrial utilities equipment.
Basic understanding of maintenance activities and procedures.
Ability to read and interpret instruction manuals, blueprints, and control system drawings.
Ability to learn mechanical and electrical control equipment and basic equipment operation.
Knowledge and understanding of lock-out/tag-out procedures.
Ability to use a personal computer and associated software.
Ability to apply knowledge of facility operations, equipment and skill area knowledge to daily decision making.
Physical Requirements:
Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and climbing,
Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
Working Conditions:
The power plant environment requires the candidate to work both inside and outside in all temperature and climate conditions (in accordance with Heat Stress procedures) and around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment, high noise areas, confined spaces, and on elevations ranging from 5 to 250 feet. The candidate must be able to climb stairways and ladders.
Alternating swing shift with ability to work over time to cover absences and vacations when needed.
