Crain's Detroit Business seeks a curious and enterprising reporter to help us grow our commercial real estate coverage in Southeast Michigan. This position will work alongside Crain's highly experienced team and focus on industrial real estate and suburban development. The right candidate will have a nose for scoops, passion for big stories and flexibility to toggle between breaking news and enterprise coverage. The candidate will also embrace alternative forms of storytelling, including video, live stage presentations, and non-traditional story formats.

You can expect to:
Develop sources, report enterprise and break news for Crain's Detroit Business across multiple platforms.
Contribute daily news items for morning, afternoon and CRE newsletters.
Use analytics tools to understand how our audience is engaging with our content; work with editors on best practices to meet audience needs.
Shoot photos, videos, and appear on camera, as needed.
Help plan content for, and participate in, Crain's live events.
Be supported by a first-rate team of journalists, both on site in Detroit and across the Crain family of brands.
Basic Qualifications and Preferences
We seek a motivated reporter with a can-do attitude who will dig deep to develop the robust sources necessary to cover the most important business stories of the day. We require a self-starter who can cultivate sources, dig through documents, develop their own story ideas, and tell stories in both an interesting and authoritative manner. A collaborative attitude, ability to multitask and fluency with social media are a must.
The ideal candidate will have an audience-first mindset and an ability to identify, report and write compelling stories on the topics assigned.
At least two years of experience in a digitally focused newsroom, including reporting, editing or producing (or as a freelancer).
Bachelor's degreein journalism or related field.
Skilled atgenerating story ideas, writing cleanly and quickly, developing sources, and breaking news.
Ability to work collaboratively with reporters and editors, and hunger to gain a mastery of commercial real estate in Southeast Michigan.
Ability to write engaging headlines
Basic data journalism skills/familiarity with Excel.
Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities.
Ability to work in the newsroom during standard office hours and as needed outside of those hours.
Portfolio/examples of recent and relevant work.
This full-time position will require work in Detroit and Southeast Michigan, and occasional night and weekend work. We offer excellent pay and benefits, as well as opportunities to advance.
This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
Pay Transparency Disclosure:
The estimated salary range for this position is $55,000 to $65,000.
The final salary offering will take into account a wide range of factors, including experience, accomplishments and location. The salary range provided should not be considered as a salary limit or cap. In addition to base salary, Crain also offers competitive benefits including retirement plan savings contributions and bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.
