General Purpose of Job:
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for day to day operations at the Sparrow Clinton Laboratory. This includes, but is not limited to staffing, systems, patient flow, expense management and other functions required to maintain patient-centered quality care. Oversees and performs various laboratory functions. Supervises lab staff and serves as communication liaison between the laboratory staff and Lab Manager.
Essential Duties:

- Provides direct supervisory responsibility for the lab.
- Posts laboratory results to their proper designation.
- Provides input regarding the need to restructure systems, workflows, reporting relationships and other improvements; assists in implementing identified improvements.
- Assists in the development of department budgets and business plans.
- Delegates responsibilities, accountability and authority to meet mutually agreed upon expectations to lab staff.
- Drafts policies/procedures which enhance daily operations within a specific area of responsibility and ensures consistency of application.
- In support of the Lab Manager, determines staffing needs required in the lab. Selects, trains, supervises, evaluates and disciplines staff. Orients and oversees the continuing education of lab caregivers. Provides input to the CNO and Lab Manager concerning the termination of lab staff. Processes time records and all other Caregiver records.
- Monitors and is accountable for daily individual performance and resource utilization; provides input regarding lab staff performance and conducts formal performance reviews with the approval of the CNO and or Lab Manager.
- Monitors daily quality, customer satisfaction and service utilization and initiates corrective action as needed.
- Investigates unusual incidents involving staff and/or equipment and takes necessary action.
- Ensured that lab is prepared for and in compliance with ISO certification, CAP accreditation, and JACHO accreditation standards.
General Requirements |
• MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), CLS (NCA), or MLT (ASCP) certification or categorical certification in a clinical specialty. |
Work Experience |
• Minimum of three years in clinical laboratory sciences with increasing level of responsibility |
Education |
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related scientific field OR • Associate’s degree in Medical Technology, with successful completion of an MLT program • Bachelor's degree of Science preferred • Coursework in management/business preferred |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
• Resource development skills • System analysis skills • Ability to identify problems and resolve them in consultation with Manager/CNO. |
