Methode Electronics, Inc. (NYSE: MEI) is seeking an Optical Engineer 3 to assist with strategic growth initiatives and the establishment of optical engineering within Methode. You will be responsible for developing innovative lighting systems using incandescent, HID, and LED light sources to create cutting-edge exterior and interior lighting concepts. Responsibilities:
Collaborate with Design Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Tooling Engineers to ensure that the optical concepts meet legal and customer requirements while staying within defined tolerances. Feasibility and benchmark studies will be conducted to support quotes and future marketing efforts.
Analyze off-tool parts, perform root cause analysis, and contribute to the certification process. Review market requirements for lighting to meet industry standards and optimize designs to enhance beam characteristics and overall optical efficiency.
Evaluate secondary optical solutions, customer lighting fixtures, and interacting with components that impact the optical subsystems of company products, using optical instrumentation such as a goniometer, spectrometer, and illuminance meters to evaluate and characterize optical performance.
Generate clear and detailed documentation for optical designs and test results and collaborate with manufacturing to diagnose concerns with the company's products. Play a significant role in the design of manufacturing tools, fixtures, and processes required for optical sub-systems.
Lead and coordinate lab and road studies for optical models, prototypes, and production parts. Work closely with Program Managers and tooling engineers to ensure the optical prescriptions are met, and address any mechanical issues that may affect optical integrity.
Investigate, develop, and prototype new lighting concepts, processes, and applications. Provide technical support to various departments within the organization, including Manufacturing, Quality Engineering, Program Managers, Project Managers, and Tooling Engineering.
Keep up-to-date on domestic and international photometric legal requirements and understand computer simulation theory and its limitations and assumptions.
Collaborate with the business development group to provide timely and accurate feasibility studies to commercialize new technologies.
Lead development and documentation of new tools, techniques, and guidelines. Educate co-workers on developed technologies and ensure compliance with patent regulations on new technologies. Coordinate with team members to determine commercial applications and prototype needs to obtain formal certification directly from approval authorities.
Coordinate and participate in local and customer night drives for evaluation purposes. This will require flexible work hours and travel to customer sites for technical reviews .Your work will involve physical measurements of lamps, analyzing photometric attributes, and assisting in the development and implementation of operating procedures and guidelines for photometric equipment and photo lab personnel.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Applied Physics
7+ years Automotive Optical Design experience; LED experience highly preferred
Experience with test equipment like Goniometer and integrating sphere
Familiarity with light manufacturing processes
Must have LucidShape or similar optical design software experience
CATIA V5, or other 3D CAD experience and ASAP
Basic programming experience a plus
Microsoft Office proficient, especially with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Team player
Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a start-up environment
Balanced judgment to operate within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
Ability to travel up to 10% of the time, both domestically and internationally
Ability to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
