Role Description
Provide strategic leadership and management for our Global Diagnostics Research and Development (R&D) team comprised of engineers and scientists. Manage resources and budgets for a large organization with staff located in the US and Europe. This is a diverse role and encompasses multiple areas of responsibility and coordination. The VP of Diagnostics R&D works across functions, as well as across diagnostic product lines and platforms primarily in companion animal and livestock healthcare as well as human healthcare. Areas of responsibility include research, design and development engineering as well as sustaining engineering for hardware instrumentation (electrical and mechanical), microfluidics, software and assay. The design and development of these products must meet applicable international regulations and requirements.
This position will be a member of the Veterinary Medicines R&D Leadership Team, a member of the Global Diagnostics Leadership Team as the R&D Diagnostics Lead, creating and contributing to strategic plans for the Zoetis R&D organization and the Global Diagnostics business. Responsible for setting annual operating plan goals and ensuring that the allocation of budget and resources is consistent with portfolio progression objectives. The role interacts extensively with counterparts in Global Manufacturing and Supply, Information Technology and Global Commercial, ensuring that the delivered products will meet customer needs and drive value for Zoetis.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide high level direction to Diagnostics R&D, including establishing key goals for operational efficiency and excellence, and continuous improvement targets. Work with peers to ensure that organizational alignment and best practices / processes are used to support efficient portfolio progression.
Lead a multi-disciplinary diagnostics R&D leadership team ensuring appropriate and timely execution of the product development portfolios.
Create a culture that promotes flexible work processes while maintaining best practices and ensures the effective transfer of R&D products into the manufacturing environment through commercialization.
Collaborate with Zoetis commercial partners to provide insights and transparency into R&D's capabilities, systems, processes, and timelines.
Create, maintain, and manage external product development partnerships and collaborations.
Responsible for technical due diligence activities for new platform technology assessments to evaluate technologies and development timelines, as well as the management of technical activities and progress with OEM suppliers.
As a member of the Global Diagnostics Portfolio Governance Team, ensure that resource allocation is consistent with portfolio priorities, project progression reflects endorsed timelines, and risk mitigation strategies are robust and transparent.
Seek opportunities to build new product offerings across the portfolio, consistent with the Zoetis strategy to drive a continuum of care (predict, prevent, detect, and treat) in addressing unmet customer need.
Remain current with new and cross industry technologies and practices, as well as evolving external requirements that impact product design, execution, analysis and reporting.
Coach and mentor direct reports and other staff as appropriate to facilitate colleague development and succession planning.
Lead function efforts to practice objective colleague performance assessment and effective performance management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree with at least 15 years' experience in the design and development of devices. Candidates without advanced degrees, but a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience, will also be considered.
Educational background in an engineering or scientific discipline with primary experience in electro-mechanical devices is preferred. Experience in a diagnostics or medical device environment is a plus.
