Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received, which included and is not limited to instrumentation and equipment received from all units according to established standards and procedure to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.
Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed by procedure. Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures.
Disassemble, clean, assemble and test patient care equipment for proper functioning; route cleaned equipment to appropriate holding areas.
Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of the chemical as well as the chemical's function; knowledge of the appropriate PPE is also necessary. Sort dirty linen, trash and BFI and disposes of them according to established procedure. Use PPE in the appropriate fashion in all areas.
Operate steam, gas (EtO), and other methods of sterilization.
Perform simple maintenance on equipment by use of the Bowie-Dick test packs, cleaning of filters and drains and use of biological test packs.
Use knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment to choose the appropriate material for sterilization processes. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving and recording as assigned
Work with Operating Room personnel to ensure specialty trays are handled in the prescribed manner.
Dissemble, clean, assemble and test specialty instrumentation and equipment for proper functioning. Can differentiate between single-use and reusable items. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving and reordering as assigned via computer. (Does not apply to all entities)
Perform in accordance with established protocols in compliance with regulatory agencies to include state and local agencies, AORN, JCAHO, OSHA, & AAMI.
Assist with teaching of new hires and work as resource person for other staff as well as other units in hospital.
