Description
Job Summary
Under general supervision, installs and repairs gas, water, sewer and heating systems and related fittings and accessories. Supervises plumbing work activities and individually performs the more difficult and responsible phases of the work.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may perform other duties as assigned)
• Performs the duties of and supervises a group of workers engaged in installing and maintaining plumbing fixtures, sanitary appliances, hot and cold water, oil, and steam, gas piping systems and heating, sewage, drainage, and sprinkling systems.
• Assigns tasks to subordinates and provides instructions on methods and materials to be used.
• Inspects work in progress and upon completion.
• Lays out sprinkling and sewage systems.
• Evaluates heating systems before placing them in service.
• Turns water on/off in sprinkling systems, drinking and display fountains, and buildings that are not used during the winter.
• Prepares estimates and materials lists.
• Requisitions tools and materials and checks to ensure that they have been received.
• Checks reports for repairs and issues instructions for their correction.
Minimum Qualifications
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
Valid Master Plumber's License issued by the State of Michigan is required. Upon hire or
promotion to this classification, employees must identify the City of Detroit as the employer
listed on the Master Plumber license issued to the employee by the State of Michigan.
Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work
assigned.
Employees in this class will be required to operate a motor vehicle. A valid State of Michigan Driver's license is required.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal
Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
Physical Demands
Work assignments require sufficient physical agility to perform the work activities associated
with the trade.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
