Job Summary
Assumes shift accountability for managing, supervising, and coordinating the operational and financial effectiveness and efficiency of the service lines. Some service lines may require the ability to be available for on-call to better support the services. Assists with development of policies, procedures and processes in coordination with unit leaders to ensure the highest quality services are provided at all times to all customers. Key responsibilities include assisting with the following: department based goal setting, program development, fiscal management, resource allocation, standards of care, policy and procedure development and interpretation, human resource development, performance improvement and maintenance of interdisciplinary collaborative relationships. Will participate in on-call duties as assigned. Assume House Supervisor role as needed.
Essential Functions
Assumes shift accountability for the delivery of quality services by direct supervision of assigned staff and interdisciplinary collaboration. Evaluates clinical care and completes rounds to ensure that care is carried out in accordance with regulatory, accrediting and professional practice standards, the philosophy, policies and procedures for the Nursing Division and organization. Ensures practice is in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code, Federal and Sate Regulations/Accreditation. Assists with interdisciplinary relationships to support improvements in care delivery, patient, staff and physician satisfaction. Evaluation of are delivery is achieved through performance improvement process, monitoring of quality indicators, evaluation of staff performance, and unit rounding.
Monitors, evaluates and reports on environment, culture, and priorities that direct and support care delivery for assigned area. Supports a work environment that promotes retention and embraces diversity. Provides leadership in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves autonomy, dignity and rights of patient's, families and staff. Acts as resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues within nursing and assigned area. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff and organization data.
Collaborates with leadership to evaluate programs and services that support patient care delivery in assigned area. This includes effective utilization of workforce, facilities and equipment. Provides feedback to leadership on the implication of policies, procedures and programs being formulated and recommends specific action. Participates and facilitates staff involvement in the development and review of policies, procedures and guidelines based on evidence based practice, research findings, and Spectrum Health quality outcomes.
Assists leadership with budget to ensure sound fiscal management consistent with the goals of the department. This includes efficient use of resources and supplies while overseeing unit operations. Maintains the standards for unit operations in the management of admissions, transfers and discharges, utilizing appropriate staff skill levels, staffing plans, and patient placement plans.
Collaborates with leadership to maintain a quality monitoring system to continuously monitor and measure the quality, safety and outcomes of nursing services for assigned area. Assists in quality improvement monitoring at the department level. Participates in interdisciplinary performance initiatives.
Encourages an environment supportive of nursing research. Supports an environment that promotes evidence-based, clinically effective, nurse-sensitive patient outcomes and other health care outcomes for assigned area. Supports a continuous learning environment to ensure on-going education and development opportunities for staff based on populations served, professional practice, new technology and/or required skills. Assists in the identification of trends and competencies in nursing practice.
Creates a climate of effective communication and respect for diversity in all interactions. Facilitates an environment of caring and collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments. Collaborates with unit leaders and staff to create and execute a vision for change that mobilizes, encourages, and unifies interdisciplinary and practice group teams. Develops, maintains, and evaluates a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff participation by encouraging shared decision-making, accountability, and autonomy in nursing practice. Serves as a role model and mentor to staff, colleagues and students.
Ensures that patients/residents, their families, visitors, customers and employees are treated in accordance with Spectrum Health's core values and service standards. Responsible for patient, customer, and staff satisfaction outcomes and developing actions that continually improve service area.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent - Preferred
skills, knowledge and abilities typically gained through 1+ years of related clinical experience in area of specialty - Required
License Practical Nursing (LPN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan required
BLS required within 90 days
