Legal Assistant Location: Detroit, MI Duration: 5 months Description: This position supports attorneys. All tasks are performed under the supervision and direction of attorneys. Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
Assist attorneys in the preparation and defense of civil litigation and administrative and arbitration proceedings
Perform case and matter preparation duties including verification of member or group eligibility, obtain pertinent contracts, certificates and riders, and other relevant documents and information related to claims
Draft, prepare, and file legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, discovery, settlement documents, and notices for review, approval, and use by attorney.
Track and ensure timely response to court ordered and administrative deadlines
Direct delivery of subpoenas
Communicate with courts, outside counsel, clients, experts, administrative staff, client or subsidiary departments, state and federal agencies, including the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services, legislative/government staffs, the client Association, and other client licensees
Assist attorneys with preparation for hearings, depositions, and trials
Assist attorneys in preparing for presentations
Maintenance and assembly of various databases
Prepare outside attorney fee invoices and vendor invoices for review and approval by attorney
Manage relationships with internal clients and potential witnesses
Assist in data and matter management within OGC and generate reports as requested
Other duties may be assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and completion of an ABA-certified legal assistant program required
Minimum of three years of significant paralegal experience in a law firm or corporate legal environment
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and LEXIS- NEXIS
Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Must provide a writing sample
Must have experience drafting briefs, pleadings, motions, discovery, settlement documents, and notices
