Animal Shelter Clinical Assistant

Duties:

• Provides for the care of animals confined to the shelter while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation.
• Maintains an effective system for supply ordering and inventory for medical operations, ensuring costs are managed efficiently.
• Monitors medical supplies for expiration and maintains DEA drug logs.
• Ensures proper intake protocols and medical wards are appropriately maintained.
• Coordinates and assists in the transfer of animals.
• Performs, assists, and properly documents euthanasia.
• Maintains positive relationships and communication with local veterinarians and performs weekly clinic rounds with a veterinarian to ensure the continued care of all animals.
• Communicates with the Shelter Manager and Kennel Supervisor regarding the daily care and specific treatment of animals.
• Assists with selecting animals for spay/neuter, rabies shot clinics, fundraising opportunities and other outreach efforts.

Education and Experience:

• Associate Degree in animal science or related field and two years of experience in an animal shelter setting or veterinary office; OR
• High school diploma or GED and four years of experience in an animal shelter setting or veterinary office.

Special Requirements:

• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license and a vehicle.
• Must complete sixteen hours of instruction from a veterinarian in the use of sodium pentobarbital within 90 days of employment, resulting in certification that demonstrates competency to give intracardial, intraperitoneal and intravenous injections, and to make a positive determination of death.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse social and economic backgrounds, including emotional pet owners.
• Capable of working in an environment with pet related noises, animal feces and urine, and in an environment where euthanasia of animals occurs.
• A vast knowledge of animals, both domestic as well as wildlife.
• Personal initiative and the ability to effectively plan and organize work.
• Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods.

Desired:

• Certification as a Veterinary Assistant or Licensed Veterinary Technician.
• Knowledge and ability to use social media outlets.
