This is a senior registered professional nurse position requiring advanced clinical decision making skills/judgment. This position is first, and sometimes the only, health care professional to assess and/or treat correctional prisoners. It is this position who determines the need for and timeliness of an appropriate referral to the physician/provider. This position is expected to initiate and sustain life-saving care and measures as appropriate, as well as perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. This position is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action. The nurse at this level may work as an emergency clinic nurse, an inpatient staff nurse, a mental health nurse, or as an ambulatory clinic nurse. The employee may be hired for a specific area, but may be held responsible to move to any or all ambulatory/inpatient settings within the complex/facility. This nurse mentors and coaches entry level RNs into their role and encourages development in professional practice.
Required Education and Experience
Possession of a diploma, associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
Registered Nurse P11
No specific type or amount is required.
Registered Nurse 12
One year of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11.
Alternate Education and Experience
Registered Nurse 12
Possession of a master's degree in nursing or possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing and six months of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11 may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Additional Requirements and Information
The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. _Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation. _
Possession of a Michigan license in good standing as a registered nurse.
