ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor degree in Nursing preferred with appropriate licensing and in good standing with the State of Michigan Board of Nursing. Oncology nursing experience of at least 1 year.
OCN certified or eligible preferred.
Demonstrated continuing education specific to oncology nursing.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain therapeutic interpersonal relationships with patients, their families and/or significant others as well as maintain communication, cooperation and interaction with the oncology community.
Demonstrated success in patient education is recommended.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
The radiation oncology nurse is a registered professional nurse who functions in a collaborative role with the radiation oncology team in providing continuity and quality patient care. Is accountable for the nursing care provided to patients, families, and/or significant others. Utilizing standards established by the Oncology Nursing Society Standards, the Michigan Board of Nursing, Munson's Nursing Department, and Radiation Oncology Nurse Performance Standards will assess and provide appropriate nursing interventions for the actual or potential problems that the patient and family may experience related to the disease process, treatment course, and follow up period. Role includes the teaching, counseling, and supportive functions needed to assist patient and family to cope with and adjust to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer as well as encouraging participating in the care planning. Competence and performance are based and annually documented against the Radiation Oncology Nurse Performance Standards. Must have the ability to prioritize work assignments and be flexible to changing needs of patient and department. Subject to element of time pressure, interruption of activities, working with groups of patients and rapidly changing intellectual demands.
