Job Description
In this role your work will be of a technical nature with decisions made within the limits of general practices, policies and standards. Your work will involve complex manufacturing problems including the need to troubleshoot and follow issues to resolve.
You will be responsible for equipment related to the manufacturing process. In this position your use of independent discernment required. You will use substantial independent judgment in complex or unusual situations. Your responsibility may involve training others and assigning work to a small group of employees.
* Specifically, the responsibility in this position is to (1) design, (2) approved designs, and (3) ensure proper function of cutting tools deployed in new an existing manufacturing sites to machine a wide range of automotive components (Cases for Transmission or Electric Drive Units, valve bodies, Gears and shafts, Engine Heads and blocks, Crankshafts, Camshafts, and/or connecting rods. Materials can be various Steels, Iron, or Aluminum. Job functions will require the following utilization of specific skills:
* For Tooling Design, a deep understanding of machining process such as cutting tool selection, sequencing, fixturing, and tool holding principles. Depth of understanding of tool wear and part material metallurgy / chemistry to match tool selection, operating parameters, and design (geometry, substrate, and coatings) to optimize tool life. Skills to support are the use of NX as this is a fundamental part of this design step, as well as Tool / CNC / Fixture design fundamentals. Sometimes requiring FEA analysis to support design decisions.
* For Design Approvals, a depth of understanding of tool design as well as understanding of processing / processing stack to achieve a part geometry within statistical tolerance is required. Will be require to approve externally produced designs for manufacturing.
* For ensuring proper function, you will be require to attend manufacturing sites to analyze tools that are not performing to intended parameters, and will be required to efficiently solve. Skills to support are an understanding of tool applications, analysis of tool failure / wear, ability to take data measurements as required, analysis FEA or mathematical principles, and a strong problem solving formal method such as Six-Sigma or related.
* You will be responsible for equipment related to the manufacturing process. In this position your use of independent discernment required. You will use substantial independent judgment in complex or unusual situations. Your responsibility may involve training others and assigning work to a small group of employees.
* You will analyze and implement product or machinery designs for the best method for manufacturing processes
* You will propose and evaluate the processes for equipment in assigned area
* Direct the design, development, and/or improvement of manufacturing processes for assigned area
* You will provide technical support for specific plant operations
* You will interact on a regular basis with design, product and manufacturing engineering staffs
* Provide direction to engineering support group and vendors
* You will evaluate or monitor expenditures for processes and/or equipment
* You will handle engineering projects with plants and/or Manufacturing Engineering Staffs.
Additional Job Description
Desired:
- Master's or PhD in Mechanical or Materials Engineering, or aptitude / interest.
- Knowledge of computer programing such as VBA, MatLab, and other equivalent logic.
- Design software experience in NX or equivalent. (parametric modeling desired)
- Aptitude or experience Finite Element Analysis Tools (Siemens NX, Third Wave Systems, Hyperworks, Abaqus, or similar tools)
- Aptitude for technical literature reviews.
- Strong knowledge and ability to run complex and innovative projects from inception and do so independently.
- Experience in design of experiments, use of analysis methods and equipment (sensor and data acquisition), and analysis of test data.
- Fundamental knowledge of cutting tools design and machining principles, manufacturing, and industry standards. Including substrate, edge preparation and coating engineering.
- Strong aptitude and approachability to support and guide multiple manufacturing plant teams under complex problem solving.
