Description:
Responsible for the overall safe management of mill operations teams. The Grayling OSB mill started up in 1982 and has a functional, Self-Directed, High-Performance work system. This position is a member of the mill Lead Team, and reports to the General Manager. This is a full time, exempt position.
Key Functions:
- Work as a member of the mill Lead team to achieve plant safety, quality, production, and profit goals.
- Promote self-directed work system growth.
- Define, implement, and lead the achievement of production department goals.
- Complete and present annual performance appraisals for all direct report employees, outlining positive and negative performance, and document a plan of action for sub-par performers. Assess the skill level of employees and provide training as needed to advance skills.
- Mentor and train production team members, assisting in creating professional and technical growth goals for each team member. Identify future leaders within the plant and support their leadership development.
- Participate with other production managers within the corporation in developing best practices and implementing standard policies, procedures, and instructions for the production team.
- Communicate with the sales, finance, engineering, and customer service teams regarding relevant production finance data.
- Monitor and control overtime schedules and costs.
- Possess a working knowledge of cost management, cost containment, productivity, uptime planning and optimization.
- Maintain a consistent presence on the production floor.
- Participate in, lead, facilitate, and communicate production continuous improvements.
- Role model all standards/processes and on-the-job behavior by living our core principles of integrity, fairness, & creating a positive inclusive work environment.
- Lead the site in developing, implementing, managing and enforcing safety policies, procedures, practices, and projects.
- Provide leadership for the ongoing development of the organization, as well as the strategic development of individual talent for succession planning.
- Optimize area of responsibility to include production scheduling, value extraction of product mix and asset utilization.
- Provide support and leadership in area of process reliability.
- Maintain long-term big picture view to forecast obstacles and opportunities.
- Interface with and establish positive relationships with operations and maintenance personnel.
- Drive corrective action process for the production team, including the creation of action plans and ensuring effective resolution to key production team projects and quality issues.
- Seek and implement cost reduction and cost avoidance plans.
- Present key business information to production team employees.
- Assure compliance with all safety and environmental standards.
