GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Athletic Trainer is a skilled professional employee who coordinates athletic services at high school level and works under the direction of Physician and supervision of the appointed supervisor of outpatient Physical Therapy. This professional is a specially trained employee with specific skills pertaining to athletic services, prevention, conditioning and rehab. In the clinic setting, the Athletic Trainer assists the Physical Therapist in the treatment and progression of the patient. He/she may assist with the initial evaluation, the re-eval, and should be available to offer suggestions on treatment procedures for orthopedic injury of previously normal extremity joints (i.e. athletic injury. Unlike other support staff the athletic trainer is able to assess extremity joints and assist the P.T. in patient evaluation. The ATC is accountable for a patient load under the supervision of a physical therapist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Independently at the school, develops and implements appropriate sport conditioning program and treatment plan for injured athletes. Coverage of appropriate sporting events as determined by the Athletic director (AD) and the Athletic trainer (ATC).
- Collaborates with intra and inter-disciplinary teams regarding the care of the athlete.
- Educate student athletes, coaches and parents on a proper treatment protocol.
- Accurately documents athletic activities / injuries.
- Promotes hospital and all of its departments.
- Maintains verbal, written and electronic communication and collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team, referral sources, physicians, and 3rd party payors.
- Participates in leadership functions: community outreach, CQI, marketing, cost containment, program development, AT student supervision; teaches staff, physicians and others.
- Professional development: Attends staff meetings; maintains and improves competence through self-study, attending in-services and continuing education programs. Clinical education to students.
- Implement an appropriate treatment plan for each patient. Accurately documents treatments and charges for self and assigned support staff.
- Serve as a resource of information and treatment skill for less knowledgeable staff, provide student supervision.
- Manage staff and department resources wisely. Supervise assigned support staff.
- Collaborate with intra and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care. Collaborates with patient, family, significant other in treatment and in discharge planning.
- Provide documentation to the physicians regarding the patient initially, at discharge, and at appropriate intervals. Discusses changes to the prescribed program with the physician before initiation.
- Athletic Trainer maintains good standing with the licensure/regulatory board and all applicable laws/rules/regulations.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:
Education / Training:
- Bachelor's degree from a program approved by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
- Master's Degree desired.
- Maintains continuing education units per NATA policy.
Work Experience:
- It is preferred that pediatric therapists have NDT certification and competency in serial casting.
Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- Michigan State License as Athletic Trainer required.
- BLS certification.
- NATA certification.
Other Qualifications:
- Competent clinical and evaluation skills are required.
- Ability to demonstrate Beaumont customer service standards; excellent verbal and written communication; ability to work independently in a fast paced environment; knowledge of clinical pathology, evaluation and treatment techniques for assigned population.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic computer proficiency for EMR documentation.
- The Athletic Trainer works closely with the athletic director and high school coaches in delivering services at the designated high school. The ATC becomes an important liaison between high school, Beaumont physicians and the Physical Therapy Department.

HIGH SCHOOL OUTREACH
ESSENTIAL DUTIES FURTHER DESCRIBED:
- Provides independent athletic training services encompassing the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions for athletes for games and practices as determined by the school Athletic Director (AD) and department supervisor.
- Collaborates and communicates with physicians, Beaumont staff, coaches, school administration, parents and the athlete to provide safe, timely, effective, efficient, and equitable compassionate, extraordinary patient centered care.
- Documents all care provided and patient treatment according to department documentation policy using Sportsware, an electronic medical record system.
- Meets all objectives and goals outlined in the department Quality program.
- Complies with department requirements for concussion management protocols and return to play policies from Beaumont Health and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).
- With appropriate parental consent, administers ImPACT baseline and post-injury computerized neurocognitive exams for all athletes.
- Completes yearly mandatory corporate and department continuing education, as well as maintain good standing with Board of Certification requirements and licensure maintenance, as determined by governing bodies.
- Possesses the ability to stay calm, compassionate, friendly, and empathetic to problem solve and prioritize delivery of services in a fast-paced, high stress environment.
- Attends scheduled department staff meetings to stay current on department and organization trends and updates.
- Maintains verbal, written and electronic communication and collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team, referral sources, and physicians.
- Collaborate with intra and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care. Collaborates with patient, and family in treatment and in discharge planning.
- Follows all written orders from supervising physician pertaining to injury or illness care, or both.
