Description
Under general supervision, performs clerical support, technical and non-technical procedures to obtain, receive, process and submit patient specimens for testing. This may include registering patients, ordering testing, checking for accuracy and forwarding accessioned specimens; performing basic specimen processing and laboratory testing procedures under appropriate supervision; performing receptionist and clerical support functions; blood collection and processing of blood specimens; assisting medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests and/or maintaining laboratory equipment and records.
Responsibilities:
Performs proper specimen collection [blood and non-blood], including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens; complies with all standards for laboratory procedures.
Performs accurately each test method and proper instrument use. Demonstrates an awareness of factors that influence test results.
Assesses and verifies the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.
Orders requested tests and accesses additional data as required using various computer functions and programs, in a complete, accurate and timely manner
Draws and collects blood samples. Verifies records.
Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed. Immediately notifies supervisor for resolution if required. Maintains supplies and equipment.
May act as a receptionist, answer telephone calls, perform computer print reports and provide test results, as applicable.
Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test order/entry into hospital information system/laboratory information system.
Obtains proper patient identification based on credentials presented, and communicates exceptions.
Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
Diploma/certificate from an accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program.
Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
One year of experience in specimen collection (i.e. phlebotomy), specimen processing and distribution, or providing clerical assistance in a laboratory setting.
