Police Co-Response Behavioral Health Specialist
Under the general supervision of the Director of Grants and Community Engagement, The Police Based Co-Response Behavioral Health Specialist will provide early intervention assessments, referrals and clinical case management services to persons in the community that are identified by assigned police departments (Detroit Police Department, Southgate Police Department, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe, etc) as possibly having mental health issues.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accompanies law enforcement officers on mental health related calls in the community.
- Provides triage and crisis intervention to persons in need.
- Assesses needs and provides resources that are linked with treatment to persons in need.
- Assesses referrals to determine appropriateness for services within the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network system of care.
- Provides case management services including providing linkage to services, monitoring, follow-up, and crisis management for consumers.
- Provides information, education, liaison, and transition services to various networks within the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.
- Provides information regarding federal, state, and community-based agencies and resources.
- Provides training and on-going education for officers to increase awareness of crisis de-escalation, mental health issues and intervention.
- Provides family members with necessary information and education to further assist persons with mental illness.
- Makes appropriate referrals and acts as a liaison with community agencies, service providers, and natural support systems.
- Provides in-reach and out-reach at designated facilities.
- Collaborates with consumers, family members, and significant others in identifying strengths and needs when identifying treatment needs.
- Works with the consumer and the family/support system for appropriate service delivery
- Develops community-based resources for social, vocational, and leisure skills.
- Maintains communication with other Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network programs e.g. Access, CSUs, Outpatient, and Navigation programs.
- Coordinates emergency services when clinically indicated or medically necessary.
- Provides risk/lethality assessment.
- Provides assessments for inpatient admission.
- Assists consumers with basic needs such as housing, food, clothing, medical and dental care, legal, vocational, and psychiatric services.
- Provides on-going training and educational opportunities for officers to increase awareness of de-escalation, mental health services and intervention practices.
- Provides family members with necessary information and education to further assist clients and themselves.
- Participates in team meetings, clinical staffing’s, and clinical consultations as scheduled.
- Utilizes clinical practice guidelines, Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and Michigan Mental Health Code standards for appropriate service delivery.
- Screens and assesses referrals for admission into other Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network services.
- Provides documentation of the referral process.
- Fosters relationships with criminal justice representatives (jail, courts, etc…)
- Manages and maintains accurate and timely data collection.
- Updates assigned databases.
- Works with the management team on reports and presentations.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
A Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Nursing (a Bachelor’s Degree will be accepted), the Human Services, the Social Services or a related field.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of professional experience in a behavioral healthcare or mental health setting.
REQUIRED LICENSE(S).
A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
In addition to working in a typical office environment, the Specialist will work outside in the community in a variety of social and environmental situations. This position will also be required to work with law enforcement in potentially stressful situations.
PLEASE NOTE: This position is contractual and based on a pilot program. The duration of this position is not specifically determined and can be terminated at any time.
