Description
Under the general direction of the Assistant Parks & Recreation Director, with broad oversight from the Parks & Recreation Director, the Parks and Recreation Intern assists with planning, setup, supervision and cleanup of recreation programs, special events and middle school athletic contests and facility rentals.
Essential Job Functions
Assists the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director with the day-to-day operations of interscholastic and non-interscholastic events, facility rentals and recreation programs.
Supervises recreation programs and activities which may include aquatic programs, sports leagues and tournaments, interscholastic athletic programs, recreation and special interest classes, special events, and other related programming.
Provide game day setup, supervision and cleanup of athletic facilities, including gymnasiums, athletic fields and pool areas.
Act as point of contact for visiting athletic teams, officials and fans.
Receives complaints and coordinates solutions with the Assistant Director.
Responds to public inquiries about recreational programs via telephone or written correspondence.
Participates in the recruitment, training and supervision of various part-time recreation staff and volunteers as assigned.
Maintains inventory of materials, equipment, and supply needs for assigned activities.
Participates in the maintenance of program related records and submits payroll for assigned staff.
Performs other related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Enrollment in a bachelor's degree in sports management, community recreation or related field is preferred
At least one year of experience in recreation programming, officiating, facility supervision, or related field is required
.First Aid, CPR, AED, and Concussion training and certification is preferred.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational programming, facilities management, and marketing.
Knowledge of the rules, procedures, equipment, facilities, safety issues and precautions relating to recreation programs.
Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including computers, specialized department programs, and other related software, and the ability to master new technologies.
Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare accurate and professional documents, records, reports and correspondence.
Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees and the public.
Ability to multi-task, problem-solve, and work effectively under stress, within deadlines and changes in work priorities.
Ability to attend programs, meetings, and events outside of normal business hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works outdoors at various sporting events, pool areas, special events and activities, and other recreation program sites. The employee may be required to exert moderate physical activity setting up program equipment, engaging in recreational activities, or other related duties. This routinely involves being outside in all types of weather including extreme heat or cold, walking on uneven terrain, and being exposed to dust or fumes, various chemicals, and other conditions associated with outdoor playfields, parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, and related venues. An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina, and physical coordination required to participate in all of these activities. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, and may be loud during recreation programs.
