Job Description
Serves as the Refrigeration Mechanic on the job site at the Parnall Correctional Facility, supervising several inmate workers on a daily basis. Assignments are generated by written and verbal work orders by supervisor, as well as self-directed work. Orders materials, and assures all work complies with all state and local codes. This assignment is located within the fenced in perimeter, and is a hands-on position training/working with inmates and around inmates daily. In the Department of Corrections, a work location is defined as (1) a facility, (2) multiple facilities that have shared services, or (3) facilities in close proximity to one another, not to exceed a distance of two miles. Parnall Facility work location has 3 facilities and regional maintenance within a two mile radius. Several are multi-level facilities.
Required Education and Experience
Education
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.
Experience
Five years of experience in the refrigeration mechanic trade, including one year equivalent to a Refrigeration Mechanic E9.
Alternate Education and Experience
Completion of a vocational training program in refrigeration mechanics that includes commercial or industrial level instruction may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades people.
Additional Requirements and Information
Some positions are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.
Some positions may be assigned maintenance, service, repair, or disposal duties that could reasonably be expected to release refrigerants into the atmosphere requiring certification in compliance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act of 1990, as amended.
The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

Leave Time
Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.
Holidays

Paid Parental Leave
Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.
Deferred Compensation
Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.
