We have created the SmithGroup Internship Program to support and mentor students from the architectural engineering program. The program's mission is to provide these students with the opportunity to attain their professional goals while advancing the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry and improving the built environment. The Detroit, MI office is looking for a Lighting Design Intern.
Selected students will spend approximately 12 weeks working as an intern in our Detroit, MI office. Students will be exposed to both the creative and business environments. Assignments will vary and include project research, site visits, computer production, design reviews, and assisting in marketing efforts. It is expected that candidates have basic hand drawing and computer software skills. Preferably, applicants have experience with Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, Trimble SketchUp, Rhino, Vray, Lumion and Microsoft Office programs.

Working with us, you will:
- Provide lighting and daylighting services to all SmithGroup offices and external clients nationally and internationally.
- Perform routine lighting design assignments under supervision.
- Collaborate with Lighting Designers to develop lighting design concepts and design direction.
- Prepare presentation material and otherwise assist in presentations both internally and externally.
- Compile data and prepare design solutions by using appropriate software (3ds Max, Revit, Grasshopper and Excel).
- Prepare documentation, presentations and renderings as instructed.
- Consult with manufacturers, evaluate materials, and select lighting systems.
- Prepare lighting cost mapping to establish project lighting budget.
- Write specifications and check shop drawings under supervision.
- Assist in construction administration including responding to RFI's, preparing sketches and addendums (CCD's), visiting the construction site to gather information and/or prepare a punch list under supervision.
- Mentor and train interns.
- Research information and create graphics for inclusion in marketing proposals and materials.
- Join and attend local professional association events/educational sessions.
An ideal candidate has:
- Minimum 1 year of related experience and/or training.
- Pursuing a degree in Architectural Engineering from an ABET - accredited college or university with a concentration in Lighting Design or equivalent; preferably with the intent to obtain a master's degree.
- Proficient in Revit and Microsoft Office products.
- Proficiency in current design software (CAD, Revit, 3ds Max, AGi32, Adobe, etc.) as well as Microsoft Office.
- Must be detailed oriented and able to work in a team environment.
- Must be able to meet deadlines and work well number pressure.
- Communicates and works professionally with all levels including co-workers, management, clients, etc.
