Purpose: The individual in this role will be primarily responsible for providing helath education development support to the Toxicology and Assessment Section. This position will work in cooperation with technical subject-area experts throughout the Division of Environmental Health, in addition to external stakeholders, to design culturally appropriate environmental health information, environmental health education, and environmental health promotion activities to reduce environmental health risk and promote better health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development and implementation of risk communication protocols, strategic educational campaigns, and/or study recruitment efforts.
- Serve as a subject matter expert to technical teams on health and risk communication best practices.
- Conduct literature searches and identify best practices with regard to risk communication and environmental health education.
- Collaborate with various entities at the state and community-levels on health education and promotion activities.
- Assist in development of Health Education protocols and reporting procedures.
- Assist in the development and implementation of evaluation and quality improvement efforts.
- Assess and respond to regional needs for training and support for specific projects and opportunities.
- Participate in public meetings, training events, and telephone conversations as needed.
- Provides additional support to the section and department on an as-needed basis.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a master's degree in public health or a public health related field such as health or risk communication, health education; a master's degree in social work with concentration in community organizations/settings.
Experience: Two or more years of experience in health education, community engagement, health communications, or public relations preferred.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
- Advanced knowledge of social theories and behavior change models.
- Moderate to advanced knowledge of risk communication.
- Advanced ability to convey highly technical information to the lay public through effective written and oral communication.
- Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal supervision.
- Basic to moderate skills using Adobe Creative Suite.
- Some basic understanding or willingness to learn scientific principles, practices and procedures of toxicology and biology.
- Basic experience with the practice of compiling and summarizing highly complex scientific literature.
- Ability to maintain records and assist with public health assessments and consultations.
- Ability to prioritize and concurrently support communications need assessments and development of outreach materials for multiple complex and diverse sites.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job setting is a standard office environment. May require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <40# and involves viewing a computer monitor up to 90% of the time. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license and occasional travel within the state to public meetings. Less frequently, travel may be required outside of the state.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS
The person in this position interacts with the public and internal staff via meetings, telephone conversations, e-mails, and field visits, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health. This position requires skills in developing risk and health communication outreach materials for both technical and lay audiences.
This individual will interface with senior health education specialists, unit and section managers, and other staff. They may attend meetings with decision makers in other state departments to support collaboration and integration of programs that serve to fulfill the mission of the public health code. This individual may be called upon to assist with the development of health education and risk communication campaigns for special projects outside of the Section on an as-needed basis.
