Position Summary
The Kaguni lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study the mechanism of replication initiation using Escherichia coli as a model system (https://bmb.natsci.msu.edu/faculty/jon-m-kaguni/current-research/). We primarily focus on proteins named DnaA, DnaB, DnaC and primase, which play specific roles during the process of helicase loading and helicase activation. The individual will obtain training in nucleic acid enzymology, molecular genetics, and cryo-electron microscopy. The postdoc is expected to participate in seminars, journal clubs, weekly lab meetings, and prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.
Description of duties: The individual is expected to devote her/his time to research activities, but may have the opportunity to teach in an undergraduate course with the approval of the research mentor. The candidate will: (i) investigate the mechanism of assembly of a nucleoprotein complex involved in DNA replication, (ii) work with the research mentor to design and conduct experiments, and then interpret the results, (iii) help to write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, (iv) help to prepare grant proposals, and (v) assist in the training of graduate and undergraduate students in the research laboratory.
The individual will receive a competitive salary with benefits and work in an excellent environment.
Required Degree
Doctorate -Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, related field.
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D., and have research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, structural biology, or related field. The candidate is expected to have excellent communication skills, and be comfortable working collaboratively with other lab members.
Desired Qualifications
Expertise in nucleic acid enzymology, protein biochemistry, and recombinant DNA techniques is highly desirable.
Required Application Materials
A cover letter describing the reasons for applying for the position, which should include how the position relates to career goals, a current CV, a summary of past research experience, and the names of three references.
