Job Description:
Staff positions are supportive roles providing support to our rehabilitation mission. Applicants for staff positions do not need to have a barrier to employment to be eligible for these roles.
The W.I.O.A. Youth Career Coach provides services for at-risk youth with a focus on education, skill development, work experience and support for youth to successfully transition to careers and productive adulthood. The Career Coach is responsible for all participant outreach, intake, objective assessment, enrollment, support, and follow-up services pertinent to the specific activities assigned for the year. The W.I.O.A. Youth Career Coach will counsel individuals to maximize the independence and employability of youth with vocational difficulties. They will provide case management and career planning assistance services to individuals who participate in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth programs. The W.I.O.A. Youth Career Coach in this program must be able to work with diverse populations, establish strong relationships with program participants, provide employment and training counseling, enter detailed information on a state-wide database, understand and utilize job development skills, and provide follow up support services to ensure the success of our participants. This position is responsible for implementing and using the Jobs for Michigan Graduates/Jobs for America's Graduates program model. This is a grant funded position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess participant eligibility for WIOA Youth services, conduct participant intake and program orientation
- Prepare and maintain records and case files, including documentation such as participants personal and eligibility information, services provided, narratives of participant contacts and relevant correspondence
- Develop individualized plans of service that fit participant's aptitudes, education levels, physical abilities, and career goals in a demand driven workforce development system
- Monitor and record participant's progress to ensure that goals and objectives are met
- Maintain close contact with participant during educational goals, job training, and transitional support through placement to resolve problems and evaluate placement adequacy
- Recruit and enroll students to the program targeting youth who are at risk of dropping out of school prior to graduation, those who are recent dropouts or who are most likely to be unemployed after graduation, are undecided on a career path with no plans of post-secondary education
- Assess student academic levels and coordinate remediation and/or tutoring required for students to improve their basic education skills toward graduation
- Coordinate career-counseling activities and establish student objectives leading to the attainment of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent, or a recognized post-secondary credential
- Deliver the curriculum developed by JAG National, monitor student progress to assure mastery of all competencies
- Assist with program recruitment by developing and maintaining a strong relationship with community partners
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate participant services in collaboration with other programs
- In cooperation with other Youth Career Coaches, arrange and/or teach job seeking skills, retention skills, and life skills for participants
- Develop and maintain relationships with community referral sources, such as schools, human service agencies and community groups appropriate to the needs of participants
- Identify barriers to youth's program success and work with participants to implement strategies for overcoming these barriers
- Assess need for supportive services and process requests, as needed
- Assist customers using public computers and resources
- Provide skill development that leads to employment retention and follow-up services for program participants
- Work collaboratively with the Capital Area Michigan Works! (CAMW) Business Service team monitoring available job leads, coordinating OJT, and customized training opportunities, screen participants and make referrals
- Coordinate program outreach services; participate in community and employer events with CAMW! and Peckham, Inc
- Maintain timely case file documentation on OSMIS and in hard copy file
- Maintain accurate documentation on participant program activities as specified by the State of Michigan, Peckham, and CAMW!
- Maintain knowledge of WIOA and CAMW! program policy
- Meet or exceed established performance expectations as defined in the contract
- Provide crisis intervention
- Review performance measures and ensure team compliance with expectations
- Provide support to public job seekers and Employment Services staff
- Support outcome measures, key indicators, and other Peckham monthly/quarterly reports
- Promote Peckham's vision, values, and services to all customers and stakeholders
- Organize the establishment of a highly motivational, career-oriented student-led organization for the purposes of developing leadership, community service and teamwork skills
- Develop and maintain an advisory committee to assist in the recruitment, screening, and selecting students who are most in need of services
- Provide mentoring and refer to school or community-based services as needed to overcome the barriers to successful completion of individual objectives
- Attend JMG staff training events and staff meetings. Assist with special events or peer-based training as needed
- Develop work-based learning and/or job shadowing experiences linked to the JAG Model curriculum to enhance student learning and occupational specific skills in their chosen career field
- Maintain contact with students to increase the probability of their goal attainment (including social media)
- Provide personal and confidential information for screening in accordance with local and state laws and organizational policies governing those working directly with students in schools.
- Complete and regularly maintain all paper and electronic documentation as required by Peckham, CAMW!, JMG, and the program.
- Ensure that all required documentation is obtained and maintained according to contract requirements
- Exceed all contract performance goals

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will manage a caseload of in-school and/ or out-of-school youth participating in W.I.O.A. program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree required and 1-2 years related experience and/or training
- Or 5-6 years of related experience in lieu of degree
- Familiar with Microsoft Office and Windows
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing career counseling and guidance and customer and personal services utilizing customer needs assessment and evaluation of customer satisfaction
- Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality and interests; and learning and motivation
- Excellent communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, psychology, or a related field
