Provide the necessary welding skills and leadership to the Engineering and Operations departments to achieve optimal levels of safety, quality, productivity, and delivery to assure internal and external customer satisfaction.
JOB TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following job/task functions have been identified as the core functions of this position. However, the supervisor or manager may assign additional duties associated with this position.
- Training Weld Engineers.
- Works on Corporate strategic projects.
- Develop new welding technologies related to new products requirement.
- Support Operations in acquiring the needed level of equipment knowledge.
- Provide key input into the development of departmental strategic goals along with identifying key measurable to support the departmental goals.
- Specify welding equipment, welding consumables, electrical and mechanical systems, robotic systems, and any related components associated with the welding process.
- Assist in the development of the weld quality control process.
- Guides design develops and tests welding methods, materials, processes, and results.
- Assist the Quality Assurance department in maintaining weld integrity. Interface with manufacturing and maintenance to resolve welding and welding system issues.
- Assist with MRO crib activities.
- Support project engineering on new and existing programs.
- Assist in the integration, start-up, and debugging of plant floor welding equipment.
- Champion assigned engineering changes, communicate and coordinate accordingly to all departments.
- Train, coach, and mentor the welding process for weld engineers, manufacturing, and skilled trades colleagues.
- Direct and/or participate in root cause analysis and team problem-solving activities (ex. 8D reports, department meetings, etc.).
- Review and resolve all weld cut and etch and destruct-related issues.
- Initiate cross-functional equipment design reviews.
- Support new model launches and improvement teams.
- Support tool tryouts at supplier and in-house capability runs.
- Participate in cross-functional and program management team activities.
- Ensure utilization of continuous improvement of current processes.
- Co-responsibility for working with Quality and Tooling Engineers on FMEAs and control plans.
- Initiate purchase order requisitions for new jobs and engineering changes on welding and assembly equipment.
- Program robots, pedestal welders, and all other types of welding-related equipment.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university; five years plus related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Hands-on experience in manual and automated welding processes
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of MIG and Spot-welding processes
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality, and workflow
- Excellent "hands-on" welding and training skills.
- Knowledge in robotic welding and material handling applications.
- Knowledge of robotic programming (ex. ABB, Fanuc robots, etc.)
- Understanding of electrical/controls circuitry and schematics.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and weld drawings
- High level of cooperation and commitment
- Mechanical Ability
- Specialized knowledge of the following:
- Weld power source, wire feeder, torch, and reamer
- Plasma cutting, grinding, and rework applications
- Weld shielding gas technologies
- Electrical enclosures and power requirements for welding
- Customer welding specifications and testing requirements
- Gas metal arc welding
- Resistance spot welding
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to work with Microsoft Office at an intermediate level.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Duties include but are not limited to standing, walking, twisting, bending, lifting, seeing, talking, and hearing, with an ability to travel. When visiting plant site locations, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, or hazardous materials.
