Dean Transportation is currently seeking qualified candidates for Service Technician (School Bus Diesel Mechanic) positions in Grand Rapids. $20-$35 per hour depending on certifications and experience and position location. Competitive benefits package provided.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Perform as a fleet mechanic which involves all areas of vehicle maintenance, diagnosis, and repair on school buses, pickup trucks, passenger vans, cars, tractors, and forklifts owned by the company.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Diagnoses vehicle problems and performs repairs as needed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and State and Federal regulations. Performs road tests on vehicles. Inspects and repairs electrical system from front to rear. Performs engine tune-ups. Troubleshoots and repairs engines; rebuilds if necessary. Inspects, services, and repairs transmissions, cooling lines, and filters. Inspects, services, and repairs brake systems, air and hydraulic. Inspects, services, and repairs drive train from transmission to rear axle. Inspect, services, and repairs front suspension. Inspects, services, and repairs windows and frames.
- Inspects, services, and repairs wiper motors, switches, arms and blades. Checks body damage and handles some body repairs. Inspects, services, and repairs cooling systems, radiator, hoses, pump, and block. Repairs carburetors and fuel Inspects, services, and repairs exhaust systems.
- Answers service calls and responds to breakdowns; conducts on-site repairs when possible.
- Repairs hydraulic wheel chair lifts and hydraulic lift Installs seat belts and harnesses on special needs buses.
- Installs accessories such as radios, strobe lights, camera boxes, etc.
- Prepares vehicle maintenance reports and submits to Regional Fleet Manager. Reviews technical reports, vehicle maintenance manuals, electrical diagrams, and meter readings to evaluate, diagnose, and repair.
- Consults with vendors concerning ordering or use of parts.
- Consults with bus drivers and other mechanics regarding maintenance problems and/or needs and advises or assists as necessary.
- Performs safety inspections; assists with Michigan State Police inspections.
- Cleans shop floor, drain pan, buckets, Properly disposes of unusable replacement parts such as batteries, brake drums, as well as used motor oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze.
- May change oil and repair or replace tires.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Vehicle maintenance experience required; truck, tractor, and/or diesel maintenance preferred.
- Technical School degree in automotive preferred, with 3 to 5 years of vehicle maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform this job.
- Must possess or be able to successfully obtain (once hired) current Mechanic Licenses through either ASE or the State of Michigan in the following areas: Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension & Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, and Electrical.
- May also be required to be certified in Computer Electronic Engine and Transmission Diagnostics.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)
- Where serving as the sole mechanic for a Dean operation, mechanic must have an excellent driving record, a minimum of seven years' driving experience, a valid driver's license, and possess or be able to successfully obtain (once hired) a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License Class B with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements and no air brake restriction.
- Some Dean operations may require mechanic to function as a substitute school bus driver if circumstances ever require additional drivers to transport students.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to physically perform the following duties with or without accommodation: Operate a variety of automotive machines, mechanics tools, and equipment such as wrecker, A/C recovery recycler, injector tester, brake bleeder, various meters and gauges, tire machine, tire spreader, plasma cutter, sledgehammer, wrenches, cutting torch, hydraulic and air lift, engine hoist and stands, wheel dolly, drill press, tire iron, etc.
- Must be able to use body members to work; lift, push, pull, move, or carry heavy objects or materials.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 to 50 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of 50 to 100 pounds.
