Position Purpose:
Job Description Details:
I Accountability Objectives:
Coordinates all pulmonary diagnostic services; including outpatient and inpatient pulmonary function testing, outpatient arterial blood gases, and oxygen titration. Coordinates all inpatient and outpatient indirect calorimetric analyses for nutritional assessments. Coordinates/performs cardio-pulmonary exercise studies and all aspects of the pulmonary rehabilitation program. Coordinates/participates in pulmonary function screening programs within the SJMO. Maintains collaborative relationship with administrative and medical directors of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Service line. Supports collaboration among health care professionals, including; non-invasive cardiovascular group, cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation group, critical care leaders, Physician Network site managers, private physician office staff, referring physicians, inpatient unit managers and the Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician Group.
II Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.
A. Education
High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
Associate and/or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Successful completion of a respiratory therapy training program.
B. Licensure / Certification
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist within 12 months of hire.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, preferred.
C Special Skill / Aptitudes
Demonstrated skill in the performance of quality pulmonary function tests.
Demonstrated ability to instruct patients and staff, while obtaining optimal pulmonary diagnostic, pulmonary exercise testing, and pulmonary rehabilitation results.
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
D. Experience
Familiar with service line requirements, including; education, technical training, and proficiency testing.
Preparation for and participation in The Joint Commission and/or other regulatory evaluations.
Minimum of 2 years working in a pulmonary function lab with past leadership experience in areas such as:
Scheduling, filing and reporting system for pulmonary diagnostics.
Quality control and associated record keeping
III Duties / Responsibilities:
Daily performance of and/or supervision of routine testing as follows:
Spirometry
Flow-volume loops
Static lung volumes by tracer gas technique
Body plethysmography
Diffusion capacity
Post exercise studies
Post bronchodilator studies
Nutritional analysis studies
Six minute walks/02 titration
Coordinates and performs daily cardio-pulmonary exercise tests.
Performs the following responsibilities for patients enrolled in the pulmonary rehabilitation program:
Completes referral/registration process.
Coordinates the scheduling of patients for pulmonary rehabilitation sessions.
Initial and final patient assessments.
Initial and final six minute walks.
Conducts weekly teaching sessions.
Monitors and evaluates EKG recordings of patients during exercise sessions. Documents patient's exercise program in rehabilitation computer system.
Conducts and assists patients through warm-up, exercise work-out and cool down phases of pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Completes and distributes physician's final progress report on patients enrolled in program.
Performs weekly critical care indirect calorimetry measurements for patients requiring nutritional assessments.
Participates in daily nutritional rounds the day following measurements.
Coordinates testing schedule to maximize patient and referring physician convenience while maintaining an efficient and cost effective lab.
Facilitates timely distribution of test results to physicians and their offices to expedite patient diagnosis and treatment.
Coordinates scheduling, supervision, and education of pulmonary diagnostic staff.
Participates in hiring and evaluating performance of all pulmonary diagnostic personnel.
Maintain current quality data and collaborates with the medical director and other members of the health care team to improve service/outcomes as indicated.
Collaborates to provide spirometry screening within existing community outreach programs in the SJM-O Community Health Care organization.

In accordance with unit or departmental practice, determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient, encounter, date/time of service, with any required modifiers. Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift.
