Pay Scale: Salaried/Exempt; total annual compensation including benefits $44,000 - $47,000, commensurate with experience
Position Summary
West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization working to protect and enhance West Michigan’s environment by translating the concerns of people into positive action. WMEAC has been delivering environmental education and advocacy to the West Michigan community for over 50 years.
WMEAC’s Director of Engagement will work collaboratively with the organization’s staff, volunteers, partners, and stakeholders (organizations, members, businesses, interested community members, and more) to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are incorporated into all aspects of the organization's programming and messaging throughout West Michigan. Essentially, this role serves as a central support for WMEAC’s climate, water, environmental education, and development efforts through DEI principles in program development, implementation, and planning.
Specific Responsibilities
- Provides internal and external direction for WMEAC’s DEI goals
- Leads the volunteer IDEAL (Inclusion and Development of Environmental Allies and Leaders) Committee
- Conducts outreach to community groups, neighborhood associations, and other local and regional stakeholders, working to facilitate participation in environmental action, justice, and protection
- Collaborates with partner organizations and municipalities across West Michigan to deliver best practices for community-based engagement, justice, and inclusion
- Develops and manages initiatives to achieve WMEAC’s strategic goals
- Supports grant development and reporting, as assigned
- Works as a team player to ensure the continued success of WMEAC and its programs by assisting program and administrative staff with special projects, as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or 2 years with experience in environmental advocacy, community organizing or outreach, or social work/social services
- Working knowledge of environmental and social justice principles
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent communication, research, and writing skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Experience in customer service and public speaking to small and large groups
- Self-motivated, independent worker
- Spanish language skills preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of local or regional environmental issues a plus
- Ability to manage a flexible schedule that can accommodate occasional evenings and weekends
Work Hours and Location
Fulltime staff are expected to work 35 hours per week, based out of WMEAC’s office in Grand Rapids. However, we do recognize hybrid work schedules where employees may choose to work from home or from our Muskegon work space 2-3 days per week.
COVID Vaccination and Mask Requirements
Currently masks are required while in the office and at indoor meetings and events. All staff and interns are required to be current on their COVID vaccinations, including any boosters as they become available and recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
