Description
Under general supervision is responsible for the well-being of animals at the Detroit Animal Care and Control facility, including but not limited to providing vaccinations on intake, completing daily care and cleaning of animals; keeping records regarding the animals' care; assisting with daily medical treatments and medications; offering comfort, exercise, and enrichment for the animals.
Examples of Duties
- Performs proper disinfection cleaning of enclosures, care areas and surfaces, bowls and dishes, bedding, and cleaning supplies.
- Provides daily care to animals, including food and water and attending to comfort and enrichment needs.
- Provides humane handling of animals per DACC policy; participates in continued education on animal handling techniques including advanced handling techniques for fractious or injured animals.
- Operates a variety of communications equipment including two-way radios, multi-line phone systems, iPads/tablets, and computers.
- Assists in documenting the overall health and the needs of animals, such as symptoms of illness or injury or behavioral need and reporting observations to proper personnel.
- Administers medication and routine vaccines to animals per DACC training.
- Provides customer assistance to citizens in person and over the phone looking for lost animals, including but not limited to completing various forms and logs regarding animals brought into the shelter.
- Provides citizens with resources and education about proper animal care, husbandry, relevant city ordinances and state laws.
- Maintains cleanliness and reports equipment damage
- Completes additional tasks necessary to keep the Animal Care and Control facility and equipment in a state of good repair. Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or G.E.D. and one year experience in caring for animals
KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles and practices of shelter animal care and kennel care, decontamination, and contagions in a shelter environment. Animal handling techniques and ability and willingness to participate in additional training provided by the department.
SKILL IN: The use of common office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications.
ABILITY TO: Assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations. Perform basic husbandry tasks such as vaccinating animals, assessing vital signs, restraining for veterinary care, basic animal grooming necessary for hygienic purposes. Learn computer software used by Detroit Animal Care and Control. Establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, representing the governmental agencies and departments, professional contacts, citizens, elected officials, and general public. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid State of Michigan Operator License required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: While performing kennel-related duties, the employee is frequently required to lift up to 40 lbs. without assistance, restrain or control aggressive animals, sit, stand, walk, run, and move freely. The noise level may be quiet or very loud. Though applicable safety procedures are documented and utilized, the employee may be exposed to unsanitary or unhygienic materials, individuals, animals, and situations in the course of performing duties.
