Saw Operator
Position Summary
The Saw Operator is responsible for safely and accurately cutting steel and other raw materials to specified lengths according to work orders and production requirements. This position supports downstream operations by ensuring material is properly identified, measured, cut, verified, and staged for the next step in the production process.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and review work orders from the supervisor or lead to determine daily production requirements.
- Locate and pull the correct raw material from designated storage racks.
- Verify material and inventory information before processing.
- Measure and cut steel to specified lengths according to work order requirements.
- Set up and operate multiple saw machines safely and efficiently.
- Verify cut lengths and material accuracy to ensure product meets specifications.
- Properly identify and stage completed material for downstream operations.
- Deliver finished material to the appropriate staging or production area.
- Assist with unloading incoming steel deliveries.
- Verify incoming material against packing slips for quantity and accuracy.
- Store incoming material in designated rack or storage locations.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area.
- Perform basic equipment maintenance, including:
- Changing saw blades
- Changing brushes
- Lubricating and greasing equipment
- Report equipment issues, material discrepancies, quality concerns, or safety hazards to the supervisor or lead.
- Follow all company safety procedures, work instructions, and quality standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned based on operational and production needs.

Qualifications & Skills
- Experience operating saw equipment in a manufacturing or steel-processing environment is preferred.
- Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure.
- Ability to use squares and other basic measuring tools.
- Basic math skills required.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to work with production or inventory systems.
- Ability to follow work orders, specifications, and verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to operate or learn to operate:
- Forklifts
- Overhead cranes and hoists
- Lift carts and other material-handling equipment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Ability to prioritize assignments and manage time effectively to meet daily production requirements.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a production team.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential.
Physical Requirements
This position requires working in an active manufacturing environment and includes:
- Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and squatting.
- Ability to safely handle material and operate production equipment throughout the shift.
- Ability to see and hear within reasonably acceptable limits necessary to perform the job safely, including distance and peripheral vision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and understand work instructions and safety requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Required PPE includes:
- Safety glasses
- Steel-toed safety shoes or boots with metatarsal protection
- Additional PPE as required by the task or work area
