Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Operational Support, this position is responsible for the day-to-day management and control of inventory, materials, tools, equipment, and supplies for Traverse City Light & Power, including TCLPfiber (the “Utility”). The Head Storekeeper exercises independent judgment in organizing inventory, prioritizing material requirements, identifying discrepancies, coordinating deliveries and returns, and maintaining an efficient, safe, and orderly warehouse and storage environment.
The position coordinates and participates in the full inventory cycle, including receiving, inspecting, recording, storing, organizing, issuing, staging, shipping, returning, and disposing of materials and supplies. The Head Storekeeper works closely with the Electric Operations, Engineering, Fiber, Procurement, and other Utility departments to anticipate material requirements and ensure materials are available to support scheduled and emergency work.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in the complete inventory cycle including receiving, inspecting, recording, stocking, staging, issuing, returning, transferring, and shipping materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Monitor daily inventory and non-stock levels. Anticipate future material requirements by participating in weekly workflow meetings with Electrical Engineering, Electric Operations, and Fiber personnel and reviewing work forecasts, reports, and scheduled projects.
- Maintain accurate inventory records using the Utility's inventory management and work order systems, established inventory procedures, physical verification, manual tracking, and reconciliation processes.
- Receive and inspect materials, supplies, equipment, and other goods delivered to the Utility. Verify quantities and specifications against purchase orders, invoices, packing slips, bills of lading, or other applicable documentation.
- Identify damaged, defective, incorrect, or non-conforming materials and coordinate returns, replacements, credits, or other appropriate resolutions with Procurement and vendors.
- Maintain the warehouse, yard, and other inventory storage areas in a clean, safe, organized, and efficient manner consistent with established principles and Utility safety standards.
- Operate material-handling and Utility equipment, including forklifts, backhoes, and other equipment for which the employee is trained and authorized.
Qualifications
- Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification, training, or degree in accounting, inventory management, procurement or related field preferred.
- Minimum of three years’ progressively responsible experience in inventory management, warehouse operations, materials management, logistics, or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to load and unload material from freight trucks using a forklift or other appropriate material-handling equipment.
- Demonstrated experience receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and maintaining inventory records for materials, equipment, tools, or supplies.
- Maintain a State of Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles, warehouse practices, material handling, receiving, shipping, and storage procedures.

Hourly Rate: $36.06 to $40.49, depending on qualifications, education, and experience. This is a union-represented position and is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
