Are you our Mechanical Engineering Designer?
This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager at our Atlas Copco-Grayling, MI facility. As a Mechanical Engineering Designer, you will partner with the Engineering Manager, customers, and cross-functional teams to develop innovative concepts and engineered solutions. Applying your mechanical design expertise, technical judgment, and problem-solving skills, you will independently evaluate design requirements and create highly functional, reliable, and cost-effective engineered solutions that meet customer specifications, project objectives, and company standards. You will play a key role in driving design excellence through sound engineering practices, continuous improvement, and collaboration throughout the product development process.
Here’s how you’ll make an impact:
- Lead the development and execution of detailed mechanical designs for fastening and automation solutions used in complex production environments.
- Independently translate customer requirements into robust, cost-effective mechanical designs, exercising sound engineering judgment and technical expertise.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance engineering drawings, standards, templates, and technical documentation to support product quality and consistency.
- Ensure design solutions comply with engineering standards, drafting requirements, regulatory requirements, and company best practices.
- Develop and validate high-quality 3D models, 2D layouts, detailed drawings, and bills of materials for complex mechanical assemblies and tooling systems.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, consistently meeting deadlines, budget constraints, and quality expectations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, documentation, design methodologies, and product performance.
- Evaluate technical challenges and develop practical engineering solutions through the application of mechanical design principles and independent judgment.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, project management, suppliers, and customers to ensure successful implementation of design solutions and project objectives.
To Succeed, You Will Need:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience with AutoCAD and working knowledge of SolidWorks through coursework, internships, co-op programs, or professional experience.
- Understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering drawing practices.
- Basic knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Familiarity with manufacturing, assembly, or machine design concepts.
- Engineering Problem Solving including Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent computer proficiency, including engineering software and general productivity tools.
- Ability to work with advanced mathematical concepts and apply strong analytical reasoning
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving capability.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a Designer Engineer in the Automotive Industry. Hands-on experience designing or detailing nutrunner fixtures, tooling, automation components, or mechanical assemblies
- Advanced Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Familiarity with manufacturing, assembly, or machine design concepts
- Advanced CAD Proficiency: skilled AutoCAD and strong working knowledge of SolidWorks
- Deep knowledge of tolerances, fits, and their application in mechanical design and manufacturing
Work Location: This role requires the individual to work on site at our Grayling, MI, location.
