Position Overview:
The Tool Maker Apprentice is responsible for learning and developing the skills required to build, assemble, and maintain tooling, fixtures, and related components used in manufacturing and inspection processes. This role participates in a structured apprenticeship program combining hands-on training and technical development to build proficiency across machining, assembly, measurement, and fabrication.
The Tool Maker Apprentice supports production operations while progressing toward full toolmaker capability, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and in compliance with quality standards and aerospace requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling Fabrication & Assembly
- Assist in the fabrication, assembly, and repair of tooling, fixtures, gauges, and related components
- Read and interpret blueprints, build sheets, and engineering drawings to support build activities
- Fit, align, and assemble tooling components using precision measuring instruments
- Perform layout and material preparation for tooling builds
- Support bench work including drilling, tapping, reaming, and assembly
Machining & Equipment Operation
- Set up and operate machine tools such as Bridgeport mills, lathes, surface grinders, and proto-track systems
- Use saws, sanders, drills, and other shop equipment to shape and finish materials
- Learn proper machine setup techniques, speeds, feeds, and tooling selection
- Follow established machining and fabrication procedures
- Perform basic CNC and manual machining tasks under supervision
Measurement & Technical Skills
- Use precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and height gages
- Develop understanding of GD&T and blueprint interpretation
- Perform basic dimensional verification of parts and assemblies
- Apply trigonometry principles to layout and measurement calculations
Quality, Compliance & Industry Standards
- Follow AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality standards and internal procedures
- Maintain compliance with ITAR regulations for aerospace and defense work
- Adhere to FOD (Foreign Object Debris) prevention practices and 6S standards
- Inspect work for conformance to specifications and report discrepancies
- Maintain documentation and traceability of work performed
Safety & Work Practices
- Maintain safe operations by following OSHA safety regulations and company procedures
- Use proper PPE and follow safe handling practices for tools and equipment
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Participate in safety training and adhere to apprenticeship safety requirements
Apprenticeship Development & Continuous Learning
- Participate in structured On-the-Job Training (OJT) and related technical instruction program
- Progress through defined apprenticeship skill levels across machining, assembly, inspection, and fabrication
- Learn a wide range of manufacturing processes including milling, grinding, CNC basics, inspection, and tooling assembly
- Demonstrate continuous improvement in technical skills, quality, and productivity
- Maintain communication between shifts to ensure continuity of work
Communication & Team Support
- Work collaboratively with toolmakers, machinists, and production teams
- Document work activities, issues, and progress
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members
- Support production schedules and workflow needs
- All other duties as assigned
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and build sheets
- Basic understanding of machining and fabrication processes
- Ability to use measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gage)
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn skilled trades
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Basic math skills, including understanding of measurements and geometry
- Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
- Interest in tooling, machining, or manufacturing careers
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, balance, and rotate trunk
- Manufacturing/shop environment with exposure to noise, machinery, and tooling
- Required use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Enrollment in or eligibility for apprenticeship program required
- Basic mechanical or manufacturing experience preferred but not required
- Willingness to complete apprenticeship program (typically ~4 years / 8000 hours OJT)
- Ability to learn machining, tooling, and manufacturing processes through structured training
