The Role
The Chiller Technician reports to the Group Leader of the Engineering Maintenance and Technical Support (EMT) support organization. The EMT team is primarily responsible for specifying, sourcing, engineering, integrating, safely commissioning and developing a robust maintenance model for test equipment within the lab. This role directly affects the quality, durability and performance of vehicles and related products developed by General Motors.
This job is based in General Motors' Milford Proving Grounds Energy and Emissions Laboratories. The lab and results it produces are used by GM's growing team of engineers in support of the vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.
The Chiller Technician role is a good fit for a qualified individual who is interested in state-of-the-art technologies and testing methods, system-level integration, and related equipment in a laboratory setting.
What You'll Do
Large tonnage chiller operation, in depth diagnostics, troubleshooting and maintenance including Universal Refrigerant Handlers License
Low pressure/ Low temperature systems
DX, flooded and absorption systems
Reciprocating, Screw, Scroll and Centrifugal compressor operation
Air- and water-cooled condensing systems
Strong in reading wiring schematics, electrical troubleshooting complex circuits and systems that may have redundant feeds or mixed voltages up to 480 volts
Be able to track, troubleshoot and diagnose building electrical distribution
Competent in use of multi-meter, megger and signal generator operation
Understand shut trip operation, gas detection system integration and be able to troubleshoot multi feed systems
Solar Array panel diagnostics
UPS System diagnostics
High Voltage capable up to but not limited to 4160 volts
Complete understanding in theory and operation of mechanical pump circuits with bypass control and multiple load sources. Be competent in reading one line drawings of mechanical systems
Have experience with pneumatic control or actuated systems
Possess solid background in preventative maintenance on many different types and styles of equipment including building and process
Understand wind tunnel design, operation and troubleshooting
Complete understanding of steam used in heating, humidity control and building systems including steam generation.
Be able to troubleshoot traps, condensate systems, steam to product heat exchangers and other systems dependent on steam operation
Have a solid understanding of chemistry and PH control in product systems used in the facility
Be able to understand and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drive operation, control and adjustment
Experienced in rigging equipment and unstable loads
Operate forklift, powered man lifts and other powered equipment commonly used in facility service
Able to use dial indicator and laser guided alignment tools to precise measurements
Be familiar with vibration data collection, ultrasonic testing and thermal imaging to be used in predictive maintenance program
Heavy lifting as required
Able to work at heights and in various temperatures as required
Have good organizational skills, be a solid communicator who is timeline motivated with a safety-based mindset
Serve as a contact to internal and external stakeholders for Engineering Maintenance and Technical support related activities, including day-to-day operations and future planning initiatives
Monitor ongoing tasks, providing regular status reports to stakeholders and leadership while proactively identifying and escalating roadblocks when appropriate
Act as a technical resource to internal and supplier teams in all aspects of Engineering Maintenance and Technical Support
Ability to create, launch, and execute a preventative equipment maintenance system and related plans for key facility infrastructure supporting testing activities
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
5+ years of related experience in Large Tonnage Chiller service role
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Maximo as used for Preventive maintenance, planning and execution
Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of autonomy in a complex environment, managing multiple maintenance events, by establishing priorities and executing with minimal supervision
Experience with equipment used in Emissions Development and Certification testing (Building and Process)
Experience utilizing building management systems for diagnosis and troubleshooting overall operation
Experience working with equipment suppliers and installation contractors
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, where issues are complex in nature
Ability to read and interpret P&ID/One line/ Electrical and Control diagrams for use in diagnosis and troubleshooting of hardware
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
10+ years of related experience in Chiller service role
Understand wind tunnel design, operation, and troubleshooting
Understanding of theory, operation, and application of mechanical pump circuits, steam, humidity control, Reverse Osmosis and CAP DI systems used to support process operation
Vibration data collection, ultrasonic testing, and thermal imaging exposure to be used in predictive maintenance programs
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Maximo as used for Preventive maintenance, planning and execution
Experience with equipment maintenance processes in an industrial setting
Experience working in an ISO 17025 or ISO 9001 accredited environment
